The lab could NOT run without the huge contributions made by undergraduates. They provide many person hours of labor and we appreciate them greatly!
From 1992-2007, over 130 undergraduates worked in my laboratory under ZY 498/BIOL 4980 (if you were an undergrad in the lab, be sure to let us know what you're up to and we will post it on the web page!). As with the graduate students, I also have a "contract" with undergrads that work in my lab.
Students that enroll in this class frequently undertake independent research projects and several are co-authors on publications and have traveled to national and international meetings to present their results. Students frequently extended their tenure in the laboratory into two or three years, I am only listing the academic year they began. Howard Hughes Life Scholars Program
I also participated
in the Howard Hughes Life Scholars program (19951998) which was designed to
give research experience to 1) undergraduates from Auburn University as well
as those from traditionally black colleges, 2) professors from traditionally
black colleges, and 3) high school biology teachers. Participants are honor
students or individuals of high merit who have been selected to receive a stipend
to conduct individual research either through an entire academic year or during
the summer. There are 29 participating faculty in departments ranging from Chemistry
to Pathobiology at the Vet School. My laboratory has consistently been chosen
by program participants.

Additionally, I participated in the Science Outreach
Initiative, another
Howard Hughes Foundation funded project. Groups of ninth graders from around
Alabama travel on different Saturdays to Auburn University and spend a morning
or afternoon hearing about science careers and are given an opportunity for
a
hands-on introduction to research techniques in use in an active laboratory.
