Y'all Come--to the Southern Gothic Dinner

Come to the Southern Gothic dinner this Thursday night (5:30-8:00 p.m.)and feast on peanut stew, fried okra, cornpone, and (maybe) some peach cobbler. Wash it all down with some tea. Warm your cockles by our (mini-) campfire.
The Southern Gothic Dinner is the annual kick-off event of the English Club and Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary society. We (the English Club) stage it for the benefit of our undergraduate English majors and minors, but all lovers of English--graduate students and faculty--are welcome as well. Please let
Tim Dykstal know if you plan to come: he can give you an idea of what dish to bring (but please come even if you feel inept in the kitchen).

Job Search Workshop Focuses on Interviewing Strategies

A Job Search Workshop on interview preparation will be held on Wednesday, October 27th, at 5:00 p.m. in HC 3104. New Assistant Professors Chris Keirstead, Ann Marie Simpkins, and Nan Jiang have volunteered to share their recent experiences on the job market and discuss interviewing strategies and techniques.
Anyone wishing to arrange for mock interviews in November is strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. All interested faculty members are also welcome. Contact Jon Bolton or Constance Relihan if you have any questions.

Benson Lectures Committee Seeks Nominations

The Benson Lectures Committee invites nominations for a speaker to deliver the 2000 Carl Benson lecture in Twentieth-Century Literature. This endowed lecture series began as a memorial tribute to Dr. Carl Benson (1916-1979), Hargis Professor of English and a prominent member of the Auburn faculty from 1947 to 1974. A nominee should be "a distinguished writer or prominent scholar in twentieth-century literature in English."
Committee members would be pleased to see biographical information about the candidates or a bibliography of the candidates' published works.
Please submit your nominations to George Crandell by Wednesday, October 27, 1999.

In June Margaret Smith delivered a guest lecture on David Jones at a graduate seminar at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas.  From October 7th through 10th, Margaret attended the inaugural conference of the Modernist Studies Association at Penn State, where she presented a paper called "A Welsh Link to the Past: David Jones's Dai Great-coat."
