Welcome

Welcome to the Auburn local ACS section website, encompassing 17 counties in Alabama and 4 counties in Georgia with its headquarters located in Auburn Alabama. Our goal is to provide you with information on all events sponsored by the local section, promote greater interactions among ACS members throughout the Southeastern region, and provide you with resources that will be most beneficial to your professional development.

This site contains our more static information. For updates and announcements about meetings etc. please go to our Facebook page.

The Auburn section is committed to the mentorship of future chemists and the promotion of interest in the chemical sciences through outreach into K-12 settings, by providing travel stipends for students to attend national and regional ACS meetings, in bringing dynamic speakers to regional institutions, by conducting novel workshops, and through the hosting of local section meetings that aim to increase interactions between students, teachers, and the general public. One way of attacting distinguished speakers is through the Kosolapoff Award and Lecture series, a program that has been running since 1986.

Our group is run exclusively by volunteers who are excited and motivated by chemistry and strive to provide substantial benefits to our membership. Please use the navigation links to look at all our information and contact us with suggestions for new content for the site or with new outreach ideas.

Travel Awards

The Auburn section has traditionally supported student travel to regional and national conferences. Undergraduate and graduate students presenting research at such meetings are encouraged to apply for travel awards. $250 awards are available for students traveling to national ACS conferences. Alternatively, travel awards can be made to any other conferences provided it is related to chemistry or important to the professional development or somehow advantageous to the graduate student in the amount of $200 awards.

Applicants should submit a copy of their submitted abstract, proof of conference registration, and a letter of recommendation from their research adviser to the Travel Awards Coordinator. Award winners will be selected primarily on the basis of these submitted materials.

Since funds are limited, preference will be given to (1) those who have not previously received a travel award from the Auburn section, (2) student researchers who are closer to graduation, and (3) those attending conferences sponsored by the American Chemical Society.
