The matrix is a critical component of Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization.
One of the most common compounds used as matrix is
alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid because it absorbs at the laser irradiation wavelength and can transfer a proton to the sample because it is acidic.

The instrument we are looking at has nitrogen laser that operates in the ultraviolet range around 337 nm. The laser can turn on and off twenty times per second.
