Graduate student Chris Marlow was recently awarded the Alabama Geological Society’s John G. Newton Scholarship for 2012, an award honoring one of the Charter Members of the Society.

John G. Newton was a geologist and hydrologist with the Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey and P. E. LaMoreaux and Associates. John is remembered professionally by the important contributions he made to Coastal Plain geology, development of groundwater supplies, geologic mapping, and the occurrence of sinkholes in unconsolidated materials. Funding has been established by the society with the financial support of members of the Newton family, and Society members.

The funds awarded are intended to assist students with current or future office, field, and/or laboratory studies. In Chris’ case, the funding will aid in his research on Shale Dynamics in the Black Warrior Basin under the direction of Dr. Ming-Kuo Lee.

Congratulations again to Chris for winning the John G. Newton Scholarship for 2012.
