COSAM alumnus adds Fuller Award to his impressive list of accolades

Dr. Barry Lee Booth ’63 was recently recognized as the 2019 recipient of the Fuller Award, the most prestigious honor awarded to its alumni by the University of Alabama School of Dentistry Alumni Association. The presentation was made during a recent ceremony during the annual Gulf Coast Dental Conference.

This latest honor, given in recognition of Dr. Booth’s contributions to the field of dentistry, is the most recent in a long list of impressive awards.  Upon his graduation from dental school in 1966, he entered active duty with the US Navy at MCDC San Diego.  He was sent to Vietnam serving entirely operational assignments and also completed jump school.  He has returned numerous occasions to provide dental care to the underserved and participated multiple times in the Hearts and Minds program treating mountain people in Vietnam villages.  For 54 years, Dr. Booth has been a pillar in the Spanish Fort community and has remained a staunch supporter of veterans.  Previously named Veteran of the Year by both Fairhope and Mobile, Dr. Booth was recognized at Battleship Memorial Park in 2020 with the highest award in the state of Alabama, a Commendation from Gov. Kay Ivey.  Dr. Booth tirelessly dedicated his time to ensure more than 1,000 veterans could see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. through Honor Flight South Alabama and has received the Distinguished Service Medal for his support of veterans.  Additionally, he purchased and made available the land for the Alabama State Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort.

According to his friend and fellow COSAM alumnus, Dr. Michael O’Brien ’79, “Dr. Booth came from very humble beginnings to ultimately hitch-hike to Auburn and meet Dean James E. Foy right away.  The rest is history.  Dean Foy helped Dr. Booth with a $55 loan and Dr. Booth has dedicated his life to helping others in so many ways.  He is most deserving of all his recognitions and awards, but most especially the Fuller award.”
