Message from the Dean: Welcome to Ed Thomas as Interim Dean of COSAM

To all COSAM Faculty, Staff and Students,

Yesterday you should have received the announcement that Dr. Edward Thomas, our current Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, will be serving in the role of Interim Dean starting on August 16, 2021.

From now through the end August when I step down from the Dean position, Ed and I will work closely to ensure a smooth transition for the college.  We will be meeting with leaders of the various units of COSAM so that Ed can get up to speed on the full range of activities that are taking place within the college. Also, during this transition period we will work to rapidly identify and appoint an Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.

In the weeks before and after the transition, Ed is planning to meet widely with faculty, staff, and students in COSAM. I expect that there will be open forums at which you will have an opportunity to give Ed your thoughts about priorities, potential new initiatives, and whatever else is on your mind.  Going into the next academic year, our goal is for all of the normal academic and administrative processes of the college – including promotion and tenure, hiring of new faculty and staff, and engagement with college stakeholders – to continue without interruption.

We all know that times of change can be challenging.  We both want to assure you that we will do everything that we can to be open and transparent during the coming weeks in order to keep you all informed about the leadership changes in the college.  I know that you will join me in giving Ed your full support as he assumes leadership of COSAM and the college embarks on a search for its next Dean in the months ahead.
