COSAM’s chemistry graduate program ranked fourth in the nation

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s graduate school program was listed as the No. 4 program in the country on the 2016 Top Chemistry Graduate Programs rankings that were recently released by GraduatePrograms.com. Each year the website publishes top graduate school rankings, which are compiled based on student and alumni feedback in areas such as quality of instruction, student diversity, campus safety, and earning potential.

“The GraduateSchool.com ranking reflects well on the commitment of Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty to providing a high quality, collaborative research environment that allows our graduate students to develop into world class scholars during their time at Auburn University,” said Curtis Shannon, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

The list includes the Top 25 programs according to recent surveys, and COSAM’s chemistry graduate program received an overall ranking of 4.55 out of 5, receiving its highest scores in Campus Safety, Quality of Instruction, Networking Opportunities, and Satisfaction With Degree.

“It is very nice to see this recognition for our Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,” said COSAM Dean Nicholas Giordano. “We have a group of dynamic faculty who are doing an outstanding job in the classroom and the laboratory.”

A total of four SEC chemistry graduate programs were included in the top 25 list, with COSAM’s program ranking the highest among the group. To see the complete list, go to this link: http://www.graduateprograms.com/school-rankings/chemistry.

Auburn University Museum of Natural History collaborates with art museum for “Call and Response” exhibit

The work of nine artists from the Auburn campus community will be on display at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine art in the exhibition, "Call and Response," June 18 through Oct. 23 in the Louise Hauss and David Brent Miller Audubon Galleries. The exhibition features natural history prints and specimens from the Auburn University Museum of Natural History, including 20 owl specimens, a taxidermy owl mount and an owl skeleton, paired with the artists' interpretation of those items using processes ranging from drawing to new media and creative writing.

"Through donor gifts, the museum's collection of natural history prints is growing in new areas beyond its already strong foundation of John James Audubon prints," said Scott Bishop, museum education curator and university liaison who organized the exhibition. Contributors and examples are from the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the Auburn University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives. "The resulting exhibition is an orchestrated chorus of diverse voices responding to the art, science and wonder of representing the natural world."

Respondents include Barb Bondy, visual artist (drawing); Kathryn Braund, historian; Anton DiSclafani, fiction writer; Andrew Kozlowski, printmaker; Zdenko Krtić, painter; Keetje Kuipers, poet; Jessye McDowell, new media artist; Rose McLarney, poet; and Claire Wilson, editor, Encyclopedia of Alabama.
