On Thursday, August 15, COSAM welcomed graduate students back. The diverse group of students from around the world had an opportunity to meet and connect with students across COSAM’s five departments before the new academic year began. Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics has selected Henry “Hal” Schenck as the recipient of the first Rosemary Kopel Brown Eminent Scholars Chair in Mathematics.
Schenck, who will assume his new role in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in Auburn this fall, currently serves as professor and chair of the Mathematics Department at Iowa State University. In addition to receiving a Provost’s Office award for Outstanding Departmental Leadership at Iowa State, Schenck earned the Wilber Layton Faculty Award for his development of extra math support for student veterans. Stewart Schneller, PhD, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Auburn University in Alabama, whose research group seeks drug candidates for Ebola and other viruses, said this is a “significant” development.
Klabacka was awarded the Henri Seibert Award from the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles for the best student paper, titled “Riverine barriers as potential drivers of biodiversification in the Draco maculatus species complex of Indochina,” presented at the society’s annual meeting.
