Joe Sumners, director of the Economic and Community Development Institute at Auburn University, recently had his article, "Building the Infrastructure for Rural Prosperity: a success story from the states," published in Ripon Forum magazine. Sumners describes how the Rural Alabama Initiative, launched in 2007 to provide financial support for economic and community development projects across the state, is a blueprint for community growth. Sumners stresses the importance of communities having strong civic, human and physical infrastructures, a goal of the initiative. He describes how in the initiative's effort, "Connecting Alabama: Boosting Broadband to Bridge the Digital Divide," County Extension Coordinators are helping to raise digital literacy by educating residents and local leaders about the benefits and applications of broadband technology.
