NCDD Announces Improved Blog System

by Sandy Heierbacher

I’d like to focus this update on NCDD's new Community News & Perspectives blog.  We're overhauling the whole website right now, and the first feature we've launched on the new site is the blog (right on the main page - thataway.org).

There are 3 parts to this announcement:

1. An overview of how the new blog is different (and better) than our old blog.

2. An introduction to our wonderful group bloggers.

3. A list of the headlines of this month’s blog posts so you can see what you’d like to check out.

Here are the details…

1.  How is the new blog different, and why should you care?

The new weblog replaces the Happenings blog many of you are familiar with, but brings with it some important changes.  While the new blog will still keep you in-the-know about what's happening in the dialogue & deliberation community (jobs, upcoming events and trainings, funding opportunities, news and requests from your peers in the field, etc.), there are some differences...

a. The new blog lives on the main page of the site, so you'll never forget how to get there.

b. It's a group blog, so in addition to myself and our blog editor Amy Lang, several others will be posting to the blog as well, and their posts will tend to be more personal and less newsy than Amy's and mine.

c. Andy Fluke, my husband and NCDD's Creative Director, has made sure we can offer our visitors two different ways to stay updated on blog posts - a regular RSS feed for those of you who know how to use that kind of thing, and a very easy, very cool "rss-to-email" service that lets you receive the day's new posts in your inbox like a regular email message (one message a day or less).  Look in the left sidebar to explore this more.

d. We still sort the blog posts into a bunch of different categories so you can find what you're looking for quickly (research, resources, conflict transformation, higher education, etc.), but the categories are much easier to use and the month categories for upcoming events are listed separately.

2. Introducing the Group Bloggers

In addition to myself (NCDD's Director) and Andy (NCDD's Creative Director), the following great people are part of our blogging team.

Amy Lang - University of Wisconsin, Ph.D. Candidate

Amy is the primary editor of the blog.  Amy Lang is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is writing her dissertation on British Columbia’s groundbreaking Citizen Assembly process. Read about the results of Amy’s research at www.ssc.wisc.edu/~alang.

Kai Degner - The OrangeBand Initiative, Executive Director

Kai Degner founded The OrangeBand Initiative in 2003 while an undergraduate in James Madison University’s Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) Department.  After going on to complete an MBA at JMU, he now offers technical, facilitation, and project management services through his own consultancy, Converging Voices LLC.  He is also an adjunct faculty member in JMU’s Honors Program.

Loretta Donovan - Worksmarts, President

Loretta Donovan, founder of worksmarts and co-owner in Appreciative Inquiry Consulting, is an ardent advocate for developing the leadership capabilities to meet the challenges of companies, communities and partnerships through action-oriented inquiry. Loretta blends participatory approaches aimed at dialogue, knowledge creation and critical action with web-based technologies to increase the capacity of learning-focused organizations.

Katie Howard - Graduate Student, University of Maryland

Katie was the conference manager for the 2006 NCDD conference in San Francisco.  A skilled facilitator, Katie is currently in the graduate program at the University of Maryland.  She has designed and facilitated numerous public involvement processes and civic engagement processes.  She is particularly interested in interfaith, law enforcement, and race-relations dialogues, and in deliberative democracy.

NCDD brings together and supports people, organizations, and resources in ways that expand the power of discussion to benefit society.  Dialogue and deliberation help people bridge gaps, make better decisions, take collective action, and become more active citizens.  Dialogues are powerful personal experiences that often lead to careful deliberation and collaborative action or policy recommendations.
