John M. Mason, Jr., PhD, PE, joined Auburn University on September 1, 2008 as Associate Provost and Vice President for Research. He is responsible for research program development, sponsored programs, and technology transfer and commercialization.
As vice president he serves on the President’s cabinet and provides leadership for strategic planning for the university research enterprise. As associate provost he serves as the President’s appointment to the University Promotion and Tenure Committee and University Senate.
Dr. Mason is also the President of the Auburn Research and Technology Foundation. His current duties include research budget responsibility, personnel, federal compliance, economic development and federal legislative research related initiatives.
Prior to joining Auburn University, Dr. Mason was the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach in the College of Engineering at Penn State University. He was a tenured Professor of Civil Engineering and had served as the Director of the Thomas D. Larson, Pennsylvania Transportation Institute and the Executive Director for the Mid-Atlantic University Transportation Center.
Dr. Mason is the immediate past Chair of the Engineering Research Council of the American Society for Engineering Education. He has previously served as chair of: the Geometric Design Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies; the executive committee, Highway Division, American Society of Civil Engineers; the Education and Training Committee of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America; several technical committees of the international Institute of Transportation Engineers. He has also been the president of the national Council of University Transportation Centers, and the Educational Division of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
Dr. Mason holds a BS degree in Transportation from Penn State University, an MS in Transportation Engineering from Villanova University, and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Texas A & M University. He is also a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania.
