Movies by and About Indigenous People
This list was compiled by RE-MEMBER's Executive Director Keith Titus and Sandy Pouncey, AAIA Student Advisor. Ebert & Roper may well diasgree, but these movies listed will give you a clearer idea of history, our people, and our ways.
Movies
- Dances with Wolves. A beautifully filmed movie. We've heard some of the old folks laugh about it. But, if you haven't seen it, it's a great entertainment, if not always technically accurate in reguard to the Sioux Nation. Indigenous people share history, teach values and share knowledge through stories.
- Dreamkeeper. Excellent story of a Traditional Lakota Storyteller of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Many of the traditional stories of many of the different tribes are told in this movie.
- Grey Owl. A true story of Archie Belamey (Grey Owl) who turned his back on the white man's ways and became probably one of the first world known environmental activist. Gives a sense of life for the Canadian Indians and how the indigenous people feel about the Earth Mother and all our relations.
- Homeland. Excellent documentary. Hard to find.
- Incident at Oglala. Excellent documentary about Leonard Peltier and events during and immediately following the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973 by the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the Lakota people.
- Last of the Dogmen. Excellent movie that gives you a sense of the life of the Cheyenne.
- Native American Medicine. John Twobirds shares a bit of the history and traditions of traditional healing.
- Skins. About Pine Ridge and was primarily filmed on Pine Ridge Reservation.
- Smoke Signals. An excellent movie that gives you a sense of life on the reservation..
- The Education of Little Tree. Excellent movie about an 8-year-old Cherokee boy, who is educated by his grandparents in the foot hills of North Carolina.
- WindTalkers. A true story about the brave Navajo Indians who helped win in WWII.
