Emory and Henry College
Auburn University, Birmingham Southern College, and Emory and Henry College will offer a 10-week study abroad program in Brazil from June through mid August, 1996. Participating students
will learn Portuguese, live with a Brazilian family, mix with local college students, and set to
know an attractive area is southeast Brazil.
The limited enrollment program can provide up to
one year's worth of transfer credits in Portuguese. Credits in other areas may also be obtain (see
your campus coordinator for details).
Piracicaba, Brazil
The study program will occur in the city of Piracicaba in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo.
Approximately 100 miles from the city of Sao Paulo, Piracicaba is an important center of about
300,000 people living in the heart of Brazil's fastest growing region. Straddling the scenic
waterfalls of the Piracicaba River, the city is an important industrial, commercial, and educational
center serving the surrounding sugar cane-based farming region. Piracicaba has a colorful
history, and its people have contributed much to Brazilian society.
Study Program
Intensive language study will begin after a brief period of familiarization with the city and the host
families. Portuguese language classes will be held during weekday morning for 7 weeks during
the 10-week program. The break periods can be used to travel or simply to enjoy the city and its
people. Students will also be able to participate in a variety of enriching cultural events during
their stay. Prospective participants should see their local campus coordinator for details about
activities and credit transfers.
UNIMEP
The complete study program will be administered by the Methodist University of Piracicaba
(UNIMEP) and their designated local director. The school is a private Brazilian institution with
a strong tradition and an excellent academic reputation. UNIMEP and the local Brazilian director
will be responsible for the program in Brazil, including all of the arrangements for
accommodations and the study program. The local instructors will be responsible for directing
the course work and certifying that all of the requirements have been met.

The overall U.S. program director is Cyrus B. Dawsey, professor of Geography and Director of
the Institute for Latin American Studies at Auburn University.

travel with the group to Brazil and spend the initial phase in Piracicaba helping the students settle
in. The Dawseys and Perruci will assist with the listing of credit when the participants return
from Brazil.
