RESEARCH PROGRAM:

 

Dr. Russell's research program is focused on identifying variables that impact the instructional socialization and effectiveness of graduate teaching assistants as college-level teachers and future members of the professoriate.

Russell, J., & Russell, M. (Summer, 2003). Development of a K-12 Interdisciplinary Curriculum for Physical Activity and Science. Instructors provided a three week summer institute in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lee County, Potter-Daniel Unit. The goal of this project was to develop and pilot a K-12 interdisciplinary curriculum during a summer institute to enhance African American and other traditionally marginalized youths’ knowledge and appreciation of physical activity and science.

Russell, J. (2001) University of Georgia TA Mentor. Served as mentor to graduate teaching assistants (GTA) in the School of Health and Human Performance as well as the University of Georgia. UGA’s TA mentor program consists of fifteen award-winning GTAs from multiple academic departments and serves a vital role in a university-wide initiative to provide (GTAs) instructional support.

 

Outreach:

Russell, J. (2006) Fifth annual Graduate School Workshop hosted by the Department of Health and Human Performance at Morehouse College. I have taken part in a panel discussion concerning the process of gaining admission to institutions of higher education. Secondly, this workshop serves as an invaluable opportunity to recruit students of color from the premier historically Black college in the country.

Russell, J. (Fall, 2003 – to present) R.O.C.K. Foundation (Reaching Out for Christ’s Kids). Serve as board member of R.O.C.K. Foundation with responsibilities including coordinating monthly meetings, writing grants for project/activity funding, and serving as a role-model and speaker.

Russell, J. (Fall 2005). Conceptualized and facilitated an on-campus visit by 10 Morehouse College students. Provided graduate program information, tour of facilities, and interactions with faculty members.
