Short Bio

Marilyn E. Strutchens, Ph.D., is an Emily R. and Gerald S. Leischuck Endowed Professor, Mildred Cheshire Fraley Distinguished Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University.

Her research interests include examining equity and access issues in mathematics education with a particular focus on factors impacting students’ engagement and achievement in mathematics, improving teacher practices, and exploring innovative field placement experiences for secondary teacher candidates through an equity lens. She is the leader of the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership’s Clinical Experiences Research Action Cluster, chair of the Advisory Committee for the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Education and Human Resources, and an Advisory Board-Member for the AAAS initiative Stimulating Research and Innovation in STEM Teacher Preservice Education, funded by the NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarships Program. She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Board of Directors (2015 -2018), a member of the Executive Board of Directors for the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (2012 -2014), and president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators [AMTE] (2011 - 2013). She received AMTE’s Judith Jacobs Lectureship in 2017.

She has served as the editor or co-editor for several books including Educating Prospective Secondary Mathematics Teachers, ICME-13 Topic Surveys: The Mathematics Education of Prospective Secondary Teachers Around the World, AMTE’s Second Monograph Series, 2012 special equity issue of The Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Focus on High School Mathematics: Fostering Reasoning and Sense Making for All Students, and Changing the Faces of Mathematics: Perspectives on African Americans. She has authored and co-authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. Dr. Strutchens was also a member of the writing team for the 2017 Alabama Strategic Mathematics Planning Committee Recommendations for Improving Alabama’s Mathematics Education. She was the Co-Director and Co-PI for Transforming East Alabama Mathematics (TEAM-Math) from 2003 – 2018, which involved several grants related to improving the teaching and learning of mathematics in East Alabama. She is currently the PI of a National Science Foundation funded grant focused on clinical/field experiences for secondary teacher candidates.

Dr. Strutchens is originally from Eastman, GA. She is married to W. Gary Martin, who is also an endowed professor of mathematics education.  She enjoys exercising and crocheting. San Juan, Puerto Rico is her favorite vacation spot.
