Minutes of the Steering Committee Meeting

In Attendance: Kathryn Flynn, Mary Ellen Mazey, Claire Crutchley, Russ Muntifering, Linda Glaze (non-member, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies), Emmett Winn, Dennis DeVries, Bob Locy, Jim Wright, Larry Crowley, Bill Hames, Robin Jaffe (non-member, chair of the Calendars and Schedules Committee)
Absent: David Shannon
--The meeting was called to order at 3:30 PM
--The minutes from the 19 October 2009 meeting were approved as posted on the web.
--We then discussed the agenda for the 10 November 2009 Senate meeting, in an effort to finalize it.
--Robin Jaffe provided an overview to the approach that was used to generate the proposed calendars.
--We discussed whether to consider all of the calendars (for 3 full academic years plus summers) or just the 2010-2011 calendar to start with. After some discussion, we concluded to bring forward all of the proposed calendars, with paper ballots ready at the Senate meeting for each one.
--We then discussed whether to consider the academic year and the summer calendars separately or together. We concluded to consider a full year’s calendar, including fall, spring, and summer semesters.
--We then turned our discussion to the information items on the agenda.
--Linda Glaze provided an update from the Core Curriculum and General Education Committee. She will provide a handout that will go to the Senators.
--We discussed whether the guidelines being developed for the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer positions will be brought back to the Senate. We discussed the Clinical and Research track positions, and concluded that we will bring this to the Senate for a vote. We will consider the guidelines as an information item in November, and will plan to vote at our next Senate meeting.
--The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 PM.
