Minutes of Senate Steering Committee
August 23, 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Present: Michael Baginski (Chair), Beverly Marshall (Secretary), Nedret Billor (Chair-Elect), Adrienne Wilson (Secretary-Elect), Dan Svyantek (Immediate-Past Chair), Bill Hardgrave (Provost), Emmett Winn (Associate Provost), and Jung Won Hur
Absent: Michael Tillson, Jared Russell, and Robert Norton
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Baginski at 3:30 pm and an agenda with attachments was provided through a link emailed to the committee.
Agenda items:
- Provost Hardgrave reported on the Dean of Libraries search.
- Provost Hardgrave reported his investigation of the role of faculty representatives to the Board of Trustees committees with BOT President Mike DeMaioribus. The Steering Committee decided to continue move forward with replacement of Lisa Kesler as the faculty representative to Student Affairs and to roll over all other appointments for the time being. The Provost indicated they would continue to explore ways for faculty representative to provide meaningful contribution to the BOT.
- Ralph Kingston presented a Faculty Handbook amendment to change the present membership of the Faculty Research Committee. Beverly Marshall also presented a Faculty Handbook amendment needed to update the composition of the Faculty Salaries and Welfare Committee to reflect organizational changes on campus. She will furnish that to Ralph Kingston for the Faculty Handbook committee to review and present at the Senate meeting on August 28.
- Beverly Marshall presented additional committee volunteers that would need to be approved at the August 28 meeting. The list included one committee volunteer that was unable to be approved at the June meeting due to the failure to reach a quorum.
- Lindsay Doukopoulos, Assistant Director of the Biggio Center, gave a preview of her presentation on tools to enhance teaching and learning.
- Beverly Marshall, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), provided a preview of the presentation by Rich Mcglynn, Executive Associate Athletic Director of Compliance, on Avoiding Academic Extra Benefits, including Academic Misconduct issues.
- Beverly Marshall presented a few reminders as FAR that may be helpful for faculty as they start a new academic year.
The agenda for the Senate meeting for 8/28/2018 includes remarks from President Leath and a pending action item for Departmental By-laws Recommendation. The Agenda was approved.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 PM.
