What a shocking tragedy to have a life cut short. I remember when I first came to Auburn, Frank and I were both in the GK-12 program. He was friendly and welcoming and invited me over to his house to hang out and play games. He seemed to have a relaxed attitude about it him that rubbed off on others. He will be missed.

I remember once running into Frank out on the town. He was surrounded by a group of people who seemed so diverse that the only commonality I could find was Frank. He was always to welcoming and curious, and that resonated with everyone he met. I'm glad that I knew him, and so sad that he's gone.

Frank was one of the best PhD math students Auburn ever had. He was also very helpful in attracting the best and the brightest graduate students to advanced algebraic topology classes. Frank obtained excellent results for his PhD dissertation, which he wrote under the supervision of Michel Smith and Piotr Minc. The main results were published in Topology and Its Applications in July 2014.

We were never all that close, but I still have a Frank story to share. This happened a long time ago, so I'm probably messing up some of the details. It was finals week of (probably) December 2007. I was holding office hours in Mell Hall with some other GTAs, but there were no students in at the time so we were pretty much just shooting the breeze. Eventually the topic turned to our various plans for the Christmas break. Frank said that he was going to take a Greyhound bus back home to Houston. "Whoa," I said. "How long does that trip take?" "I'm not sure," he replied, "but one bus takes me to Mobile, and then I wait for about six hours for another bus that will take me to Houston." Hmm. My family lives in Mobile, so I told him that if he could reschedule slightly, then he could just ride down with me and time things so that he would avoid the long layover. Frank told me not to worry about it. He didn't mind the layover as it would give him time to work on some research that he had been thinking about. Most folks would have bitched endlessly about the prospect of sitting around a bus station for six hours, but Frank wasn't annoyed in the slightest. He only saw the positive in the situation. Somehow I imagine the world would be better off with more people like Frank in it.

I remember the first time I met Frank was when I was an undergraduate at Auburn during my sophomore year and I was struggling with Linear Algebra. He became my tutor for a couple weeks and in just those short weeks he became sort of a mentor to me. He is what I strive to be as a graduate student. He absolutely loved learning and Math and I remember him always checking up on me and my progress in the department as the years went by. He was absolutely one of the most kind people I've met in the department and he will truly be missed by those who knew him. Thank you Frank for being an example for me and for so many others.

I used to tease him and say he was going to be the "nutty professor" and his students would call him "Dr. Franken Sturm". He thought I was nuts too (a family trait). I hope his student’s learned & appreciated him. I can see from this memorial that this was true. He was a truly gifted young man, gone too soon. He accomplished a lot in a short time. He had a good time and enjoyed life. Our family will miss our "motorcycling mathematician"

Frank was a fellow topologist and now, looking back, I feel like he was one of my "brothers in arms," so to speak, as we fought our way through graduate school. We had similar interests; we competed with each other; we learned from each other. Frank, it breaks my heart to see you go.
