Isbell receives Academy of General Dentistry’s Distinguished Service Award
Gordon Isbell, chemistry '76, received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). The award recognizes an AGD council, committee or task force member who has exhibited outstanding leadership capabilities and whose contributions have resulted in significant and fundamental advances toward fulfilling AGD’s overall mission. Since the award’s inception in 1986, only 31 of AGD’s 39,000 members have received the honor.
After graduating from Auburn, Isbell went on to the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in 1981. He then returned to his hometown, Gadsden, Ala., and began his practice, Isbell Dental, where he remains today.
Isbell is an active member of the Dean’s Leadership Council and has served in many roles for AGD. He is a member of numerous dental societies and committees and has received various awards including AGD’s Mastership Award, the association’s highest honor.

COSAM graduate receives Distinguished Dissertation Award
Justin Havird, a 2014 doctoral graduate of the Department of Biological Sciences, has been selected as a winner of the Graduate School’s Distinguished Dissertation Awards.
The awards recognize the scholarship of doctoral students whose dissertations make an unusually significant contribution to their respective disciplines. Auburn’s colleges and schools nominate students for the awards, and an award committee composed of graduate faculty selects the award winners.
Havird’s dissertation, “Disturbance in the anchialine ecosystem: ramifications for ecology and physiology,” was awarded a $500 honorarium and a certificate. His dissertation committee consisted of Scott Santos, Raymond Henry, Mark Liles and Alan Wilson. Havird is now a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University.

Alumna Spotlight: Iris Hill
Iris Hill is an actress, singer and dancer who has been featured in print ads and commercials for companies such as Apple, Wells Fargo, the NFL, Purina and Virgin America. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Auburn in pre-veterinary/zoology and master’s degree in conservation biology, she went on to fulfill her dream of working in the entertainment industry. She has trained extensively in Los Angeles and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has landed roles in television, film and theatre working alongside stars such as Jane Lynch, Mel B and Joey Fatone. In her spare time, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native enjoys being around animals, helping out with her favorite philanthropic organizations and cheering on her beloved Auburn Tigers.
