“I want to use science to change people’s lives,” explained COSAM’s 2019 Summer Graduation Marshal. This outstanding student shares how she wants “to use the knowledge and opportunity I have been given to give back to others” pursuing a career as a scientist. Dr. Yu Lin from the Department of Physics is part of a team of researchers that has received a record grant from NASA. “On a large, global scale, we are looking at the particle dynamics in the Earth’s northern magnetic cusp region,” she shared. Find out about Dr. Lin’s role as a theory lead on this record $115 million grant.
“We falsify several hypotheses and show that class size has the largest impact on female participation, with smaller classes leading to more equitable participation,” Dr. Ballen explained. “We also found that women are most likely to participate after small-group discussions when instructors use diverse teaching strategies.” Read more about this study and check out this article from Cornell University.
Dr. Thi Thao Phuong Hoang is the recipient of a new $149,660 NSF Award focusing on numerical methods. See how she will be using this award to work on large-scale problems that impact the environment.
COSAM researchers were in Toulouse, France to conduct an experiment on the International Space Station. See them at the control center for the microgravity lab.
