Auburn chemist seeks to find evidence-based issues and solutions of doctoral education through NSF CAREER Award for $737,148

Jordan Harshman, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is the first member of the Discipline-Based Educational Research cluster in COSAM to receive a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for $737,148.

Harshman is using this award to research and analyze faculty perspectives of doctoral education in the field of chemistry.

Rebecca Self, the spring 2022 graduation marshal for COSAM, shares how the actuarial science program at Auburn University prepares students for successful careers. She also discusses how she had an exceptional college experience filled with lasting memories. 

“I am looking forward to starting a new job in Charlotte, North Carolina after graduation,” said Self. “I always liked math and the actuarial mathematics program at Auburn University has prepared me for my new career.”

King, Chen and Govil among 38 faculty and staff recognized at Auburn Author Awards Ceremony

Three faculty members from COSAM were among 38 Auburn University faculty and staff that were recognized at the 2022 Auburn Author Awards ceremony held April 13 in the RBD Library’s Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium.

Bruner appointed president of Environmental Education Association of Alabama

Toni Bruner, education and outreach coordinator for the Auburn University Museum of Natural History was nominated and unanimously appointed as president of the Environmental Education Association of Alabama, or EEAA, at its annual conference held February 24-27 at the Gulf State Learning Center in Gulf Shores.

Bruner will serve in the leadership role over the next two years. At the start of her career in environmental education 18 years ago, Bruner initially became involved with EEAA as a conference participant and has served as an EEAA board member for the past 16 years.

“COSAM is proud to prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers in science,” said Ed Thomas, COSAM interim dean. “Hank Hartsfield and Kathryn Thornton are two COSAM alumni who shaped the field of astronomy through selflessly serving on flight crews and completing missions in space for the greater good. They serve as inspirations for the current generation of COSAM faculty and students who continue to advance our understanding of the space environment and the role of humans in space.”
