SCORE hosts 2022 Southern Educational Robotics Conference, engages educators across the nation with robotics industry speakers and innovative STEM workshops

“Every time you interact with and engage students through STEM in your classroom, it has a far-reaching impact and can influence your students’ future,” stated Allen Landers, professor and chair of COSAM’s Department of Physics, as he welcomed educators and set the inspirational tone for a robotics conference like no other.

On October 6 and 7, K-12 teachers, media specialists and administrators participated in STEM-centered robotics presentations and workshops at the 2022 Southern Educational Robotics Conference (SERC) held in Auburn University’s innovative Academic Classroom and Laboratory Complex.

COSAM, VCOM and Bluefield University partner in new early admission program for Master of Health Science in Anesthesia Program on VCOM’s Auburn campus

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Bluefield University and the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) signed a cooperative agreement allowing students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Pre-Anesthesiologist Assistant degree from Auburn University and a Master of Health Sciences in Anesthesia (MHSA) from VCOM through the Rocovich Early Admission Program (REAP).

REAP provides Biomedical Sciences students the opportunity to receive credit for their senior year coursework while attending the MHSA Program at the VCOM-Auburn Campus. REAP is a unique opportunity for COSAM students interested in a career as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant. Students in the REAP program complete their senior year bachelor’s degree requirements through MSHA coursework.

VCOM’s MHSA Program’s Dean, Mike Nichols, and Medical Director, Dr. Gary Bridges, spoke to Auburn students about the MHSA Program at the September 27 Alpha Epsilon Delta meeting.

25th Anniversary Summer Bridge Program Alumni Spotlight: Bell Rogers explains how this program changes so many lives

“This program,” Bell Rogers began, “it is my heart.” Twenty-four years ago, Rogers’ son, William Rogers IV began the STEM Summer Bridge program. Dr. Overtoun Jenda had begun STEM Summer Bridge the year before, and during the opening address he delivered, Rogers was immediately set at ease. “He made me feel safe, that my child would be taken care of.” Considering that this was occurring during the second year of the program, Jenda was searching for additional sponsors who would be able to help make sure the program could continue to reach more students. Rogers was happy to step into that role.

Program created to develop research writing skills among engineering students

Many graduate students are expected to conduct experiments and run tests in the lab. Eventually, their advisor steps in and says, ‘Hey, can you write a paper about your results?’ However, limited and inconsistent guidance is often provided to graduate students on how to write that paper.

A multi-disciplinary team of Auburn University scientists and writing experts have a proposed solution. Their four-step program, “The Writing SySTEM: A Systematic Approach to Graduate Writing Instruction and Intervention,” is designed to develop the communication/writing skills of research-minded graduate students, earning a three-year, $435,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovations in Graduate Education award.

Congratulations to Jordan Harshman from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for being a co-principal investigator on this project.
