COSAM celebrates outstanding staff contributions with naming of 2022 Lilly-Lovelace Distinguished Service AwardOn Oct. 11, the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, recognized the 2022 Lilly-Lovelace Distinguished Service Award winners at a COSAM staff town hall event held in the Melton Student Center. Each winner was presented with an eagle statue and a check at the event.
“Our staff are often the unsung heroes that hold COSAM together, and I am happy to recognize some of these outstanding individuals,” remarked COSAM Interim Dean Ed Thomas. “These individuals exemplify the outstanding work by staff throughout our college.”
Named in honor of two former COSAM staff members, Eva Lilly and Jan Lovelace, the Lilly-Lovelace Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to individual staff members in COSAM who have demonstrated exemplary service to the college. Lilly provided 42 years of service, primarily in COSAM’s Department of Geosciences, and Lovelace served as an executive support assistant in COSAM’s dean’s office for 13 years. The award was established in 2012 following Lovelace’s retirement. | |

Auburn physics student is selected for prestigious Department of Energy fellowshipPatrick Gemperline has been selected as one of 44 outstanding graduate students in the nation by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science Graduate Student Research or SCGSR Program.
A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he graduated with triple degrees in physics, mathematics, and computer science from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He is currently a graduate student in Auburn University’s Department of Physics working in the Films, Interfaces, and Nanostructures of Oxides Lab (FINO).
Gemperline will spend four months at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from January through April of 2023. Then, he will return to the Plains to finish his degree and graduate with his doctorate in physics. | |

Auburn University to recognize 2022 Faculty Award winners on Nov. 17Auburn will recognize the 2022 recipients of the university’s most prestigious faculty awards for teaching, research and outreach during its 16th annual Faculty Awards ceremony on Nov. 17.

With a strategic effort to improve teaching and learning, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is recognized for its innovative efforts to enhance and expand GTA professional development, K-12 Math Teacher Recruitment and Preparation and integration of evidence-based teaching practices in courses. By sharing best practices through the scholarship of teaching and learning, the department's efforts to create a culture of scholarly teaching have resulted in increased interest and participation in faculty development programs. Moreover, the department continues to foster a culture of assessment and support for ongoing improvement. | |
