Auburn University chemistry students inspire next generation of scientists through engaging outreach activities.“Auburn University is deeply rooted in its land-grant mission and it is essential that we provide outreach to support the entire community,” said Vince Ortiz, the Ruth W. Molette Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and faculty advisor for the Auburn University NOBCChE, or National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, Chapter. “These students are inspiring the next generation of diverse chemists who will conduct research leading to more effective and well-rounded advancements in the field of chemistry.”

This event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the taproom of Red Clay Brewing Co. in Opelika. No registration is required. Join us to chat about bioinorganic chemistry and some of the metals found in the body with Christian Goldsmith, professor in Auburn's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Goldsmith will be giving a brief introduction to the field of bioinorganic chemistry as well as introducing the general field of inorganic chemistry, summarizing how metals are used by biological organisms. After that, he will illustrate these concepts using four biologically relevant metals. | |||
Auburn’s Department of Physics celebrates 100 years with a community tailgateOn Oct. 29, the Department of Physics celebrated 100 years by showcasing interesting and exciting demonstrations in front of the Leach Science Center.
“We had a great time interacting with people before the football game,” said Allen Landers, chair of the department. “Seeing physics in action is a terrific way to increase awareness of our program while also helping people learn about its importance.” | |||
COSAM graduate students compete as finalists in Auburn University’s Three Minute Thesis competitionOn Nov. 8 in the Melton Student Center Ballroom, ten graduate students competed in the finals of Auburn University’s 2022 Three Minute Thesis Competition, or 3MT, hosted by the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Council.
Two of the ten finalists represented the College of Sciences and Mathematics: Ishveen Kaur from Biological Sciences and Miranda Silano from Geosciences. At the competition, a panel of judges voted on an overall winner and a runner-up, while the audience voted on a People’s Choice Award winner. Silano received the most votes to take home the People’s Choice Award, earning $250 in prize money. Kaur initially tied for runner-up with Justin Harvell, a student in Chemical Engineering; Harvell was named runner-up after a tiebreaker decided on by People’s Choice votes. | |||
