John F. Hartwig receives 2024 Kosolapoff Award sharing insight of catalysis and complex molecules

On Wednesday, March 27 at 8 p.m., John F. Hartwig, the Henry Rapoport Chair in Organic Chemistry at the University of California Berkeley, received Auburn University’s 2024 Kosolapoff Award from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His lecture delved into his remarkable career.

 

“Tonight, you will hear from a distinguished speaker who has contributed to a breadth of research,” said Rashad Karimov, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who introduced his former postdoctoral advisor.

 

Hartwig’s talk, Catalyzing Chemical Synthesis, discussed what chemistry can do to make complex molecules with direct applications to major industries from solar to communications.

STEM Outreach hosts State Science Olympiad

STEM Outreach hosts State Science Olympiad

The STEM Outreach Office in the College of Sciences and Mathematics hosted the State Science Olympiad tournament on Saturday, March 23. The competition brought the top 24 middle and high school teams in the state to compete in a sports-like STEM environment.

 

Students battled in twenty-three events to take home the first-place trophy. One winning team in each of the two divisions (high school and middle school) qualify for the national competition held at Michigan State University in May.

Emily Roarty shares her scientific journey at this year’s Anne Phillips Sassaman Lecture

Emily Roarty ’01 gave the annual Anne Phillips Sassaman Lecture on Monday, March 11, 2024.

 

An alumna of Auburn University, Roarty earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology before pursuing her doctoral degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

 

“I came to Auburn with a dream of helping others,” said Roarty.
