The College of Sciences and Mathematics Outreach Office at Auburn University strives to promote scientific literacy and interest among K-12 students, teachers and communities in our region, state and nation

 

2022-23 STEM Outreach Student Volunteer Opportunities

If you are looking for an opportunity to interact with kids who love science and math as much as you do we have many opportunities for COSAM undergraduate and graduate students to volunteer. For questions about any of these opportunities please contact Katie Marlow, kgm0045@auburn.edu.


DESTINATION STEM - OCTOBER 20, 2022

Time: 8:30 - 3pm (various time allotments available), Beard Eaves Memorial Coliseum
Volunteer Opportunities: Registration, general, breakdown/cleanup (only available 1:30 - 3 p.m.), concessions/hospitality
Event Description: Auburn University faculty, staff and students provide hands on STEM information and highlight their fields of study. Destination STEM gives students a chance to learn about our programs and the incredible opportunities offered through Auburn’s College of Science and Mathematics.

SOUTH’S BEST - DECEMBER 3-4, 2022

Time: 7 - 6 p.m. daily, Beard Eaves Memorial Coliseum
Volunteer Opportunities: Judging, reffing, queuing, logistics, setup/cleanup, concessions/hospitality
Event Description: South’s BEST is an annual competition that uses the excitement of robotics to teach engineering and business processes in a fun, sports-like environment. Middle and high school teams are tasked with building a robot to compete against other schools.

MATHEMATICAL PUZZLE PROGRAMS (MAPP) - FEBRUARY 11, 2023

Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Parker Hall
Volunteer Opportunities: Registration, logistics, setup/cleanup, concessions/hospitality
Event Description: MaPP gets students learning about and using mathematics to solve puzzles. Content from various areas outside the usual secondary mathematics curriculum is used such as design theory, game theory, number theory, graph theory, topology and more.


EMPOWHER - FEBRUARY 14, 2023

Time: TBD
Volunteer Opportunities: Presenters, room ambassadors, breakout-session leaders
Event Description: EmpowHER is an annual conference for middle school students designed to promote females in STEM. This event features female faculty, staff and students from the College of Sciences and Mathematics. 


GETTING UNDER THE SURFACE (G.U.T.S.) - MONTHLY EVENT

Volunteer Opportunities: Presenter
Event Description: GUTS is an evening program for 1st–6th grade students and their caregivers offered 2–3 times a year. Each evening session includes a 90–minute science activity. GUTS enhances science literacy and engagement within our community. 


SCIENCE CAFE & SCIENCE PUB - MONTHLY EVENT

Volunteer Opportunities: Presenter
Event Description: The Science Cafe/Pub provides a venue for open discussions about new and exciting science and technology with scientists in our community while relaxing in a great local food or drink venue.
