Industrial Design Faculty, Staff and StudentsThe department has hired full-time Administrative Assistant Camilla �Missy� Gowan. Missy has 10 years experience at Auburn and is working out to be a real asset to the department.Professor Clark Lundell is presently serving on the National Association of Schools of Art and Design Accreditation Commission which accredits all Industrial Design programs in the U.S. and is also on IDSA�s Education Committee as NASAD Liaison. He presented a paper entitled �Boundaries of a Technocentric Culture, The New Aesthetic� at IDSA�s Education Conference in Washington and is presently representing the College of Architecture, Design and Construction (CADC) on AU�s Research Council. Bret Smith was promoted to full Professor this past September and recognized at the CADC Awards Banquet with a Faculty Teaching Award. Bret recently completed the design and fabrication of a mechanical prototype for a bath access sliding seat as part of an AU/IND Consultation and is currently directing a third year studio in an invited competition for the design of a 35mm camera sponsored by Samsung. Auburn is one of thirteen schools nation-wide participating in this event. Bret served as Advisor to graduate student Chien-Chung �James� Kang who graduated in August and is presently working in Arizona. Associate Professor Tin Man Lau was presented with a Brother International Recognition Award for work accomplished over the past three years with fourth year students, in the development of conceptual consumer products. He also received the CADC Faculty Recognition Research Award for his contributions to this effort in the college. Tin Man assisted in the final phase of the Residential Utility Core (ResCore) Project for the Department of Energy (DOE) and hosted a contingent of International scholars from Harbin University, PRC. Associate Professor Laura Prange directed a hands-on iron casting experience in her spring quarter second year studio. Students traveled to the Sloss Furnace in Birmingham to create green sand molds and cast parts for their designs of garden tools. Many of their final designs were on display in the Foy Union Gallery as part of this year�s 19th Annual Design Interaction. |
Under Laura�s direction IND graduate student Michael Browning completed his research into the application of visual cues to way-finding, utilizing conventional mapping systems. Laura has also been selected by the City of Atlanta to be listed on their Public Art Roster from which artists are commissioned to create public art. Rich Britnell was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor this past September and is currently directing a fourth year studio industry collaboration with Load King, Inc, of Jacksonville, FL. Rich�s students are developing new concepts for food service and salad bar equipment and will present their designs in Jacksonville at the end of the quarter. Graduate Assistant Wai Chi has been working with Rich on this project and has also assisted him in displaying Rich�s students� Hitachi camcorder designs in the Foy Union Gallery Show this past fall. Assistant Professor Randall Bartlett was presented a Faculty Teaching Recognition Award at the CADC Awards Banquet this September. He also recently directed 17 third year students in the fabrication of a full scale, 1000 square foot drug store training prototype for the Eckard Drug Store Chain. The prototype was constructed in 10 days and was the outcome of a collaboration with Auburn�s School of Pharmacy. Randy has recently published an instructional video on rendering which is available through Insight Media, NY, NY. Assistant Professor Brenda Peters recently attended the national meeting of composite materials manufacturers in Orlando, FL and was able to establish contacts and solicit information for application in her IND Materials and Technology class. Brenda also was requested to design the identifying logo for the Alabama Home Builders Association which will appear on their stationary and association promotional materials. In addition Brenda is faculty advisor in AU�s African-American Student Athlete Mentoring Program. Industrial Design Laboratory Specialist II Glen Boyd with the assistance of IND students Chad Walters and Kenelm Winslow and graduate student Bob Dunham constructed and installed two Rescore prototypes for Habitat for Humanity Homes in Plains, GA. With support provided through this DOE funded project, three Habitat houses have been equipped with Auburn/IND designed ResCore utility walls. This project received national recognition during a presentation made at DOE�s Washington DC Headquarters. |
