Combing through history: Auburn University leads multi-institutional team of scientists who provide more proof that comb jellies are at the base of the animal kingdom

In 2014, Auburn University scientists in the Department of Biological Sciences’ Molette Biology Laboratory for Environmental and Climate Change Studies and University of Florida researchers shook the foundation of evolutionary biology: for more than a century, researchers believed sponges were the earliest living lineages of the animal tree. Thanks to modern genomic sequencing techniques, Auburn scientists, together with scientists at the Universities of Florida and Alabama, provided novel evidence that ctenophores, or comb jellies, are actually at the base of the animal kingdom. The research results were published in the journal Nature, sparking a debate amongst the scientific community.

COSAM names 2017 Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. James William Ott

Dr. James William “Jim” Ott was recognized as the 2017 COSAM Distinguished Alumnus. Ott received a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University in mathematics in 1965 and a doctorate in mathematics in 1969. His career began with Triangle Universities Computation Center, where he developed software for educational computers shared by Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ott was an adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Science. In 1982, Ott founded Triangle Systems, Inc., developing software for IBM mainframe computer systems. Presently, he continues to oversee the company.

Couch awarded Distinguished Faculty Teaching Fellowship at Lamar University

PhD graduate Dr. P. J.  Couch ('12) has been awarded the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Fellowship at Lamar University. This prestigious three-year term fellowship is to recognize, reward, and support faculty who have demonstrated outstanding performance in  instruction across an academic career. The award includes a very nice financial benefit of ­more than $40,000. Dr. Couch received his PhD from Auburn under the supervision of Professor Curt Lindner and is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Lamar University. He just gave a job hunting presentation last week to DMS graduate students. Congratulations PJ !
