In the weeks leading up to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Department of Geosciences, in collaboration with the Jules Collins Smith Museum (JCSM) of Fine Art, hosted the “Mother Earth as Art” exhibition. The exhibit featured real satellite images of Earth taken from USGS and NASA. These images were then color enhanced and framed as pieces of artwork and hanged in the museum gallery. Led by Chandana Mitra, in collaboration with students Megha Shrestha, Elijah Johnson, Quinlan Swain and Austin Barnard, the exhibit was geared toward raising awareness about the beauty of our planet and human induced landcover changes and climate change effects. The gallery was made up of three sub-sections of images: Our Beautiful Earth, Human Footprint on our Beautiful Earth, and Future of our Beautiful Earth. This project is a part of a USGS funded program ‘AmericaView’ which mainly focuses on remote sensing education and outreach.

“I am not at all surprised that William has found his place in academic medicine,” explained Gwin’s former professor Lawrence Wit. “I fondly remember the days when William would just drop by the office for a chat. Whether it was physiology or philosophy, William would always probe beyond the obvious and seek new vistas and deeper understanding. He equally blends a great mind with a compassionate spirit – qualities which will stand him well as he tests novel therapeutics for cancer patients and trains the next generation of medical professionals.”

“Studying physics was an immense help in learning to think clearly. I learned to note carefully the methods that were used to reach a given conclusion, the assumptions that were made, and what degree of certainty could be claimed for the result. These are habits that I’ve tried to keep in all my work,” explained David Bradshaw who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Auburn University in 1982.

Planning continues as we prepare to welcome students for the start of the Fall semester in August. While a number of details are not yet finalized and will probably be announced by the President and Provost soon, here are some general thoughts on what these plans will look like. Many aspects of the Auburn reopening plan will likely be similar to what we are all hearing from other universities.

“Everyone in COSAM is hard at work supporting the mission of the college during this very trying time. Since we are mostly working remotely, I want to be sure that we maintain personal connections and communications as much as possible. To that end, we have implemented a series of informal meetings, to answer questions and just remind people of our commitment to implementing ways that our college can make a real difference,” explained Dean Nicholas J. Giordano of the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM). All faculty, staff and students are being given opportunities to connect with the Dean and the other COSAM Leadership and express their opinions.

Department of Physics Captures Photos of Supernova 2020jfo
06/09/2020
“Supernovae are discovered quite frequently now,” explained Melissa Halford, a lecturer in the Department of Physics. “This supernova is supernova 2020jfo. At first, supernovae only had one letter associated with them - for example, a famous supernova was supernova 1987A, the first supernova observed in the year 1987. As technology got better, a single letter was no longer sufficient to count all of the supernovae discovered in a year. So, astronomers added a second letter and then a third. Now, thousands are discovered every year.”
