Zoom session on July 21, 2020, includes statistical examination of the coronavirus.

On Tuesday, July 21, a Zoom Q&A was held. The Q&A session included research from a project examining the statistical examination of the coronavirus. The students worked on COVID-19 data as their final project in the course STAT 6650—Statistical Learning, taught by Assistant Professor Jingyi Zheng, a recent addition to data science faculty in Department of Mathematics & Statistics (DMS). The students with backgrounds ranging from computational mathematics to statistics comprised the team for this project, which examined the countries most impacted by the global pandemic and analyzed numbers at the state level as well. Under Zheng’s guidance, they used the data science techniques they learned in class, as well as knowledge from their various academic backgrounds, to provide useful inference for this real-world problem. This project resulted in an article titled “A Data-driven Approach for Assessing the Impact of Re-opening Order and Non-pharmaceutical Interventions on the Spread of COVID-19 using Time-dependent SEIR Model,” and the article has been accepted for presentation at the highly competitive International Workshop on Data Mining in Bioinformatics. Arboretum Now Taking Reservations for Outdoor/Physically Distant Meetings

Located in the heart of Auburn’s campus, the Davis Arboretum is a 13.5 acre outdoor classroom equipped to meet your social distancing needs. Beginning July 20, 2020, you can reserve one of three meeting spaces in the Arboretum to hold physically distant, in-person meetings. The pavilion (15 – 20 people), the council ring (5-8 people), and the outdoor classroom (6-12 people), can all be reserved in 2 hour blocks of time throughout the day. These meeting spaces cost $25/ meeting block and can include tables, chairs, and projector set up upon request. The main pavilion and outdoor classroom by the bog are both covered spaces which include fans and access to power. Golf cart, bike and vehicle parking are also available on site. In addition to meetings, we are also reserving times and spaces for in-person classes or office hours at no charge. Get out of the conference room and come together with your colleagues in a natural setting. Dr. Mark Carpenter received a one-year award for $380,000 which will be split approximately three ways among Mathematics/Statistics, Aerospace, and Computer Science. The grant is from from MSIC (Missile and Space Intelligence Center), and the task will start on August 1.
