Message from the Dean: Tiger Giving Day 2021

To all COSAM Faculty, Staff, and Students, This year, being part of Tiger Giving Day is more important than ever. For 24 hours on Wednesday, February 24, our university will unite to help us decode the DNA for our Auburn Oaks, create Math Bootcamps for our veterans, and recruit and support underrepresented students studying geosciences. Tiger Giving Day benefits our entire university and helps us continue our mission of teaching and research. By supporting this initiative, you are helping the university make an even bigger impact and connecting our college community together. New X-ray diffraction instrumentation sets Auburn University apart in Alabama

Ryan Comes, Thomas and Jean Walter assistant professor in the Department of Physics, and Byron Farnum, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, have worked together for three years on research for next-generation materials for electronic and energy applications at Auburn University, and now, they are bringing the best world-class X-ray diffraction instrumentation to the state of Alabama.

COSAM Research Fair encourages students to actively pursue research

Students who are interested in beginning undergraduate research were able to explore the wide range of opportunities available to them at the 3rd Annual Undergraduate Research Opportunities Fair hosted by the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM). This year, the fair featured 18 undergraduate research labs aiming to connect students to the lab that suits them best.

Arboretum curator directly impacts conservation efforts for extremely rare oaks

Davis Arboretum has increasingly become known for expertise in southeastern native oaks, and being able to produce contributions like this report proves it is warranted,” said Patrick Thompson, special collections curator for the Davis Arboretum, which is nationally accredited for its oaks collection.

King appointed to the Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Geologists

David T. King, Jr., Professor of Geology in the Dept. of Geosciences, has been appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey to the Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Geologists (ABLPG) for a term that expires in 2022. Dr. King took the oath of office for this position in October last year. He re-joins the ABLPG as the member who is the academic representative for the state's universities that offer B.S. degrees in geology. Auburn, like the University of Alabama and the University of South Alabama, offers a B.S. in geology degree programs that can lead to licensure for their graduates. Dr. King previously served as the academic member the ABLPG from 2005-2014 after being appointed by Gov. Riley. David King is a licensed professional geologist in the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. He is Auburn's designated program contact for geological licensure information for students.
