DMS graduate student Shuoyang Wang selected for COSAM Dean's Research Award

DMS graduate student Shuoyang Wang has been selected for the COSAM Dean’s Research Award for PhD students for 2022! He will be recognized at a ceremony to be held on Monday, April 4, 2022, at 3:00 pm in SCC 115. Shuoyang is scheduled to graduate with his PhD (Dr. Guanqun Cao, advisor) this May and has accepted a Postdoctoral Associate position at Yale.

Auburn researchers receive $635,169 USDA award to understand mechanisms associated with decreased mineral nutritional quality in soybeans grown in elevated carbon dioxide

Soybeans grown with exposure to higher levels of CO2 have higher yields but reduced amount of mineral nutrients, which then leads to less nutritious food affecting the entire food ecosystem.

Maurer named Stewart W. Schneller Endowed Chair

David Maurer, professor in the Department of Physics, has been named the Stewart W. Schneller Endowed Chair through Sept. 30, 2026. The Schneller Endowed Chair was established by friends, alumni, students, and colleagues in honor of former COSAM Dean Stewart Schneller. “Being selected as the Schneller Endowed Chair is truly a great honor and makes me reflect upon my contributions to Auburn and my broader research community, and motivates me to continue to make a difference through my future research, teaching, and service,” Maurer said.

Zheng receives NSF funding as sole PI for her project

Brian Counterman receives $1.5 million NSF CAREER Award to investigate plasticity, genetic and environmental impacts on butterflies

Brian Counterman conducts research asking insightful questions about the environment, genetics and mating preferences impacting the Dogface Butterfly. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award for $1,565,641 for “Physiological genomics of sexually dimorphic developmental plasticity on butterfly wings.” His research will also help inspire the next generation of scientists currently in Alabama middle schools through outreach programs.

City of Auburn and Auburn University collaborate to implement GIS advancements and applications through fellowship

The City of Auburn and Auburn University are partnering together to create an annual fellowship to provide students with hands-on experience using practical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The current student, Jacob Mayberry, has been expanding several advanced geospatial data models by leveraging multiple field collection products, remote sensing technology, and building information management systems to improve the city’s facility and asset management operations since he started the MS program in Geography in the fall of 2021.

Spotlight on Auburn University’s Small Satellite Program: A mission to educate future leaders through space research

Imagine, as a student, having a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a satellite and launch it into space while on campus at Auburn University. One such opportunity does exist within COSAM, and it’s recruiting new students for future space missions! The Auburn University Small Satellite Program (AUSSP) is both a workforce development program and a space science and technology research program. In AUSSP, students get to design, build, test, and operate CubeSats - small, cube-shaped satellites - that are launched into orbit around Earth where they perform science missions.

Graham Cooks, the Henry B. Hass Distinguished Professor in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University, is the recipient of the Auburn University 36th Annual G. M. Kosolapoff Award. His research involves using mass spectrometry, the science and technology of ions. He leads experiments that provide immediate information during surgery in the operating room through direct tissue analysis.
