After five sessions covering topics like genomes, weather, dinosaurs, rocks, forensics, space and more, the Office of Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, concluded its final Science Matters camp. The camp impacted 340 total students in rising 1st-6th grades over the summer. Science Matters provided elementary students with a supercharged science experience exploring various themes in science through age-appropriate experiments, technology, art projects and hands-on activities.

Nedret Billor, Coordinator of Statistics and Data Science Programs, Professor of statistics at Auburn University, and Yanzhao Cao, the Don Logan Endowed Chair of Mathematics, Professor, Graduate Program Officer, and Associate Chair at Auburn University, traveled to the Autonomous University of Coahuila, or UAdeC, in May 2022 to initiate conversations about opportunities for academic collaboration as well as joint research projects between the two academic institutions.

Daniel Golden, who graduated from Auburn in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, received a promotion at the beginning of this year to serve as Vice President and Global Head of Research, Discovery and Breakthrough Innovation at Elanco Animal Health.

Amanda Savrda, an Earth and Environmental Science Teacher at Auburn High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in geology and a master’s in secondary science education from Auburn University. She is the first graduate with a degree from the Department of Geosciences to receive the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award from the National Association of Geosciences Teachers, or NAGT.

From July 11–15, the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, hosted introductory and intermediate 3D printing and design camps, giving students an opportunity to engage in creativity while developing software, engineering and design skills through active learning and print projects.

This year, the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, enthusiastically celebrates the 25th anniversary of its Summer Bridge Program–a four-week, summer program housed in COSAM’s Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity that assists incoming freshmen from historically underrepresented groups majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields with academic preparedness and social support to excel within the academic rigor of the COSAM curriculum.
