Daniel Zalik Fellowship has been established

The Zalik Foundation Fund on behalf of Helen and David Zalik has established an endowment for the purpose of providing fellowships for graduate students in our department. The fellowship, known as the Daniel Zalik Fellowship, will be awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence as determined by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Graduate Studies Committee.

DMSs Carpenter awarded a new 1-year Department of Defense (DoD) contract, totaling ~$610,000, for AI/ML modeling and support

  DMS Professor Mark Carpenter has been awarded a new 1-year Department of Defense (DoD) contract, totaling ~$610,000, for AI/ML modeling and support. This project involves collaboration with the Aerospace Engineering department, and the funding will be evenly divided between the two departments. This brings Dr. Carpenter's total value of DoD contracts to over $2 million since 2019.   Congrats, Mark!

DMSs Lanius (PI), Kuechle (co-PI), and Abebe (Co-PI) receive NSF award of $400,000

                    Melinda Lanius (PI), Valetin Kuechle (co-PI), and Ash Abebe (Co-PI) receive new NSF award of $400,000 for the project "Building a Calculus Active Learning Environment Equally Beneficial Across a Diverse Student Population." The project will start on 01/15/2024 and its expected completion is 12/31/2026. This project aims to replicate the Merit Recitation Program from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In this type of calculus recitation, students have extended class time to work collaboratively in groups on more challenging problems.    Details of the award are found at   https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2315747

The Sun and all stars are powered through fusion, which makes it the Universe’s preferred method of producing energy. Recent breakthroughs in fusion research have led to the US government’s Bold Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy and the remarkable growth of the global fusion industry.

Auburn mathematician works with international team of physicists and mathematicians to win best software award at ISSAC 2023

The  International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation (ISSAC) takes place every two years; the 2023 edition took place last month in Tromso, Norway. ISSAC is the premier showcase for progress in computational algebra, with Maplesoft and the German Fachgruppe Computeralgebra jointly awarding a prize for the best new software.

Auburn University’s Tonia Schwartz, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), and Melody Russell, professor of science education, and Endowed Alumni Professor in the College of Education, are the recipients of a four-year award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with David A. W. Miller, associate professor in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Pennsylvania State University, and Amanda Sparkman, associate professor of biology at Westmont College.

Auburn astrophysicist selected as one of 14 researchers for the 2026 launch of NASA’s ULTRASAT – Israel’s first space telescope mission

Dennis Bodewits, an associate professor in the Department of Physics in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), is one of just 14 researchers selected to use NASA’s Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite (ULTRASAT), which will launch for orbit in the summer of 2026. Bodewits and John Noonan, a postdoctoral scientist in his lab, will study the water production rates and behaviors of comets throughout the solar system with this wide field space telescope.

Auburn’s ichthyologist honored with award of excellence

Most people know Jonathan Armbruster as the director of Auburn University’s Museum of Natural History, which is a position he has proudly served in since 2016. He is also known for naming a previously unknown catfish species, Peckoltia greedoi, after a Rodian bounty hunter character, Greedo, from Star Wars. Now Armbruster has another accolade to add to his impressive list of achievements, the 2023 recipient of the prestigious Robert H. Gibbs Award for Excellence in Systematic Ichthyology.
