More than 1,300 graduates celebrated the end of their Auburn journey before turning their tassels to officially become the university’s newest alumni during the university’s 2024 summer ceremonies on Aug. 3.
Amid the cheers of families and friends, Auburn’s summer graduation featured a trio of ceremonies that highlighted the achievements of the university’s newest graduates. Addressing more than 10,000 guests, President Christopher B. Roberts, who presided over the ceremonies, praised the graduates for their continued tenacity and expressed confidence as they begin their next chapter.
“As you step across the stage today, you are now the torchbearers of the Auburn Creed,” Roberts said. “I am confident you will use the knowledge and skills we have imparted to you to impact the lives of others and forge a better world.”
The ceremonies, held at Neville Arena and streamed online, featured speeches from Provost Vini Nathan and Beau Byrd, a 1989 alumnus of the Harbert College of Business. Byrd, a distinguished attorney in Birmingham, delivered the commencement address at each event. Sharing his personal journey as an Auburn student, Byrd reflected on working multiple jobs while serving as the Student Government Association Treasurer. Crediting his success to his humble upbringing and unique Auburn experience, Byrd emphasized the enduring theme of family throughout his remarks.
“I was the first person on my father’s side of the family to earn a college degree,” said Byrd. “So, I felt proud to represent my family – a group of hard-working people who invested their time and talents in me so that I could have a better life.”
Offering sage advice, Byrd shared three lessons his life experiences have taught him over his 30-year career, including becoming indispensable, nurturing relationships that matter and realizing the benefits of an Auburn education.
“Auburn gave me the tools to be successful. My business education was certainly crucial, and so were the leadership skills I gained through my involvement with student government. To be successful, I had to push away the self-doubt, believe in myself and continue to learn and develop in my job.”
The university’s summer ceremonies held special meaning for graduates like Carson Anderson, who earned a Master of Science in Exercise, Performance and Health while working full-time in the Harrison College of Pharmacy and as a personal trainer. As his parents, new fiancée and family members cheered, Anderson reflected on the hard work and dedication that defined his Auburn journey, crediting much of his success to his family.
“While completing my bachelor's and master's, I juggled two jobs, school, family and social life,” said Anderson. “Most days started at 4 am. It was hard, but I stayed determined, knowing my end goal was within reach. I could not have done it without the support of both my family and my Auburn Family. As I prepare to leave, I know I’m taking the pride and perseverance that defined my time as a student, and I know I’m forever connected to the Auburn Family.”
Auburn families, whether biological or chosen, are essential in enhancing the student experience and fostering their success.
“Auburn’s graduation is a wonderful celebration honoring both the hard work of our students and the support of friends and family towards their success,” Nathan said. “Everyone in the arena, along with countless viewers on the live stream, has contributed to these memorable ceremonies. Witnessing the joy and cheers as graduates' names are announced was a moving, heartwarming experience.”
For some, this transition may be daunting, but it's one they've been preparing for.
“Coming to Auburn as a transfer student was intimidating at first, but the Auburn Family made me feel welcome as soon as I got here,” said Callie McFall, who graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design and Production Management. “After I graduate, I’m moving to Charleston to start my career as a bridal designer. Even though it's scary to move on to the real world, I know I’m ready for it.”
