Change a CIP Code

Overview

Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes are used by the Department of Education to categorize programs. (CIP codes)

Process Details

To change a program’s CIP code the originating academic unit should:

  1. Submit Proposal into CIM

Input the change into the Curriculum Inventory Management System (CIM) for review and approval by appropriate unit, college and university committees. A CIM training guide is available for assistance.

University committees (graduate and undergraduate) meet once a month and usually review all proposals received by the first of that month. The undergraduate committee does not meet in the summer months.

  2. Request Alabama Commission on Higher Education Review

Upon Provost approval, work with the university’s ACHE Coordinator to prepare and submit the following itemfor the Alabama Commission on Higher Education:

    1. Changes to the Commission’s Academic Program Inventory Form

The Commission meets four times per year.

Process Completion

CIP Code changes are made annually in June, following the most recent ACHE meeting to comply with external reporting mandates. Following a CIP Code change, the college or school is responsible for ensuring that students in the program are moved to the new program structure.
