In this four-session Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Academy, departmental teams will create a plan to enrich students’ critical thinking through effective writing. Some plans might be small (e.g., adjustments to already existing assignments to account for artificial intelligence); some might require moderate time (e.g., integrating peer and self-assessments into team-based projects); and some might be substantial (e.g., creating a new a capstone course that includes a professional ePortfolio). Teams will determine the scope of the plan, and they will have support from University Writing during implementation.

The Miller Writing Center is open for summer semester from May 20 to July 29. We will be open on Sunday (asynchronous and Zoom only) from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Monday - Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are closed May 27 for Memorial Day, June 19 for Juneteenth, and July 4 for Independence Day. Auburn students, faculty, and staff can get free, one-on-one feedback from a Miller Writing Center peer consultant on any kind of writing at any point in the process. Make up to three in-person, online, or asynchronous appointments per week through Advise Assist.

Graduate students working on longer projects—such as a thesis, dissertation, ePortfolio, or piece for publication—are invited to register for WriteFest. Over four sessions, participants will explore and practice mindfulness-based habits and skills that support their well-being and productivity while writing. During each session, participants will also have dedicated time to write alongside peers in a supportive environment, with refreshments provided. Graduate students can register to participate either in person, in the University Writing Studio on the second floor of RBD Library (Room 2056), or virtually, via Zoom, and are expected to attend all four sessions. Sessions will be held on the following dates from 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.: May 22, May 29, June 5, and June 12.

The inaugural Faculty Mindful Writing Retreat aims to help faculty of all ranks develop and refine healthy writing habits and make progress on research or creative scholarship. Participants will integrate well-being into their writing processes through contemplative practices such as yoga, meditation, and reflective writing. They will also enjoy ample shared writing time and community conversations about writing and academic life.

A writing group can help you progress on writing projects, maintain a healthy writing routine, and get feedback on your writing from your colleagues. Faculty, staff, and postdoc writing groups meet in person or virtually throughout the semester. Please plan to devote about one hour of your time each week to this program—although groups are free to determine their own time commitments. Once writing groups are assigned, group members will collaboratively determine how to use their time across the semester.

A semester-long writing group can help you maintain a healthy writing routine and progress on your current writing projects, such as your dissertation, thesis, course project, conference presentation, piece for publication, report, or ePortfolio. Participants will regularly check in with their group members to discuss their writing goals, reflect on their writing progress and challenges, give feedback, and encourage each other.

As one of several “ungrading” strategies, specification grading (specs grading) is a powerful strategy for reshaping student writing, featuring explicit learning objectives, pass-fail grading specifications, bundled assessments, and opportunities for exam retakes and assignment resubmissions. This workshop will introduce faculty to specification grading and its application in writing assignments. The workshop will be led by expert instructors in writing pedagogy and specs grading. Participants will learn how to design effective assignment specifications, create grading rubrics, and implement specification grading in their writing-enriched courses or courses with writing assignments. The workshop will include inspiring sessions, sharing of experiences, hands-on activities, and reflections. Participants will also have the opportunity to join a working group on specs grading.

Designing Accessible Documents I: Microsoft Word, Zoom 

Chances are that you create documents for your job. But do you know how to make those documents accessible to people with visual disabilities? This workshop will introduce you to principles of accessible design, including metadata, hierarchy, font, hyperlinks, color, and alternative text within Microsoft Word.

Join this Learning Community to learn how to create or refine your professional ePortfolio. Many professionals find ePortfolios, personal websites that feature samples and provide a narrative of their work, helpful in building their online presence and reflecting on their progress. This Learning Community will draw from University Writing’s nationally recognized ePortfolio curriculum to help you think through curation, design, navigation, accessibility, ethics, and the overall coherence of your message. Meetings will run weekly in July. Day, time, and location (RBD, virtual, or hybrid) will be determined by registrants’ needs. All Auburn employees are welcome.
