Helpful Writing Tips
Below are some helpful tips to make sure COSAM has consistent writing in all of its collateral:
Alumna, alumni, alumnus:
If you are referring to just one female graduate, use alumna.
If you are referring to just one male graduate, use alumnus.
If you are referring to a group of graduates, we recommend that you use alumni for all. Alumni is the plural form for men and alumnae is the plural form for females. However, we refer to all as alumni.
Academic Degrees:
When talking about degrees, capitalize the specific degree name:
Bachelor of Science from Auburn University
Master of Science
Certificate in Medicinal Chemistry
Ph.D.
If you are not referring to the specific degree, you do not need to capitalize the degree name:
bachelor's, master's degree, certificate or doctorate degree
Dates:
Always use cardinal dates. So July 4, not July 4th.
Departments:
Always refer to all department with their full names:
Department of Biological Sciences
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Department of Geosciences
