Title: Canonical Forms, Membership, and Isomorphism

Abstract: I'll talk about how canonical forms are used to determine membership, whether in subspaces, ideals, or integral closures, and how the idea of membership is equivalent to the idea of isomorphism. But the real topic is whether some mathematics is useful or only just technically correct.
