2024 COSAM Dean's Medalists

 

Courtney Gray, Dean's Medalist

Courtney Gray

Biological Sciences
Athens, AL

Courtney Gray will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Microbial Biology with a Pre-Dentistry concentration. She has maintained a perfect GPA and appeared on the Dean's List every semester while enrolled at Auburn. Courtney was awarded the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship in 2020, the Ken and Pat Farmer Endowed Fund for Excellence in 2021, the Red Diamond Ever Auburn Endowed Scholarship for Honors students in 2022, and the Dr. Wendell Hill Taylor Sr. Endowed Scholarship in 2021 and 2022.

During her time at Auburn, Courtney has been involved in numerous clubs, including Active Minds, America's Tooth Fairy at Auburn University, Generation Action, and the Alpha Epsilon Delta honor society. She is an active member of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and a member of the Honors College. Courtney has participated in several drives to stock food kitchens and provide toys and food to the Lee Country Human Society, has educated an after-school program about oral hygiene, and has tutored many of her peers. She accumulated over 60 hours of observation time at esteemed dental clinics, including Dynamic Dentistry of the Shoals, Athens Dental Services, and Dental Professionals on Whitesburg.

Following graduation, Courtney will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, beginning in July 2024.

Alexis McFeely, Dean's Medalist

Alexis McFeely

Alexis McFeely will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology and a minor in Spanish. Alexis was awarded the Fund for Excellence, and she contributed to the writing of a review on the regulatory role of epitranscriptomic modifications that was published in BioChem in November of 2022. Alexis has presented her research at scientific forums including the 2023 Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Day.

Alexis served the Auburn-Opelika community as a volunteer with Project Uplift and as an afterschool tutor with Esperanza House. She also participated in summer clinical volunteer opportunities with the Children's Rehabilitation Service (CRS) of Huntsville and New Hope Children's Clinic. Alexis took part in a week-long service trip to Filadelfia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica during the summer of 2023, was a Learning Assistant for General Physics II for two semesters and is a national member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. Alexis was greatly impacted by her leadership roles as President of Sigma Phi Lambda, a Christian sorority on campus, and as a COSAM Leader during her junior and senior years.

Alexis will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine in the fall to pursue a career in the medical field.

Tessa Allen, Dean's Medalist

Tessa Allen

Tessa Allen will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Tessa is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and was selected as Panhellenic Scholar of the Month in September 2023. She has received numerous scholarships, including the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship, and has been on the Dean's List every semester while attending Auburn.

Tessa worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Auburn University School of Kinesiology before being granted an Undergraduate Research Fellowship within Dr. Elizabeth Schwartz's lab in the Department of Biological Sciences. Through her work in Dr. Schwartz's lab, Tessa was invited to share her research group's findings at the Southeastern Branch of the American Society for Microbiology Conference in 2023 and the National Conference for Undergraduate Research in Long Beach, California in 2024.

Tessa was project coordinator for the BIG Event, the director of Delta Gamma Dialogues in her sorority, and worked as a committee member in the University Program Council. Tessa has volunteered her time with Auburn University Campus Kitchens, the American Red Cross Club, and the EmpowHer conference. She currently tutors grade school students through Our House Auburn.

Tessa has been accepted to the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and plans to pursue a career in the medical field.


Tessa Allen, Dean's Medalist

Juan Luis Contreras

Biomedical Sciences
Birmingham, AL

Juan Luis Contreras will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Spanish. He has been awarded the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship and appeared on the Dean's List every semester while enrolled at Auburn. Juan Luis is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Epsilon Delta honor societies, and he was named an Auburn Plainsman Top 25.

Juan Luis served as an Undergraduate Learning Assistant for General Chemistry 1 and 2 and Organic Chemistry. During his time in Auburn, Juan Luis conducted research in Dr. Byron Farnum's laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In Dr. Farnum's lab, he helped analyze and conduct experiments on quantitative comparison of ion-exchange membranes used in redox batteries and researched their potential in improving renewable energy.

Juan Luis has extensive volunteer experience through his work with Camp Kesem, Senior Pals at Auburn University, Best Buddies, and Campus Kitchens. While at Auburn, Juan Luis gave tours to prospective students and their families with COSAM Leaders and Student Recruiters. He will be attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine this upcoming year to pursue his medical education.

Cameron Tice, Dean's Medalist

Cameron Tice

Cameron Tice will graduate summa cum laude as an Honors Scholar, with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Psychology. He has been awarded the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence and received numerous scholarships, including the Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship. Cameron is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta and Psi Chi honor societies.

As a freshman, Cameron was the Director of Health and Wellness for International Finance Corporation (IFC), leading community-wide health initiatives. He founded Generation Action, an organization focused on improving the reproductive health of students on campus. During this time, Cameron also worked at East Alabama Medical Center as a patient sitter and then at Elmore Community Hospital with patients in hospice or detoxification care. His primary research at the Juvenile Delinquency Lab was funded through an Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Cameron's work on treatment efficacy and substance use has garnered him multiple awards, including an acceptance to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research Advocacy Program, a National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Internship, and a Goldwater Scholarship.

Following graduation, Cameron will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Medical Science at the University of Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar. He hopes this upcoming year will prepare him for a career centered on improving the lives of others through research.

Sean O'Hare, Dean's Medalist

Sean O'Hare

Sean O'Hare will graduate as an Honors Scholar with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Business. Throughout his time at Auburn, Sean has excelled academically, received numerous scholarships, and was named to the Dean's List every semester and the Honors College Director's List each year. He has served as a Peer Tutor with the Office of Academic Support, assisting fellow students with biology and organic chemistry courses and facilitating over 150 sessions.

Sean has conducted research in the Mansoorabadi Lab, working to characterize the luciferase from the dinoflagellate species Noctiluca scintillans. As a junior, he earned an Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship for his work and presented the findings at the 2023 Auburn University Research Student Symposium and the 2023 Southeast Enzyme Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. As an IMPACT Project Coordinator, Sean has been deeply involved in the local community, tutoring and mentoring children through the organizations I Am My Brother's Keeper and Esperanza House. He has been an active member of Auburn's student chapters of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical

Sean is taking a gap year following graduation and plans to perform research at the National Institutes of Health through their post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award Program. He is applying to medical school this upcoming summer.


Jake Swartz, Dean's Medalist

Jake Swartz will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Geographic Information Systems certificate. During his time at Auburn University, he has served as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Dr. David King's Earth and Life Through Time class and was President of Auburn's Geo Club. He has also worked with Dr. Chandana Mitra and the Biggio Center to combine remote sensing and science education to facilitate a more engaging environment for courses at Auburn.

Jake has served as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for Dr. Laura Bilenker's Economic Geology and Geochemistry lab, working with graduate student Elyssa Rivera to study the Fe isotopic compositions of garnet and magnetite in the Tibes skarn located in Puerto Rico. Most recently, he began directed studies with Dr. Raphael Gottardi in 2024 to investigate quartzite samples from the Miocene Raft River detachment shear zone in Utah. Jake intends to aggregate microstructure analysis from his inquiries with Dr. Gottardi and electron microprobe work from Dr. Willis Hames's Electron Microprobe Analysis course to characterize these samples' chemical and tectonic provenance.

Jake is looking forward to pursuing a master's degree in structural geology and geochronology starting in the Fall of 2024 after a summer fellowship with the United States Geological Survey.

Maia Goldstein, Dean's Medalist

Maia Goldstein will graduate as an Honors Scholar with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Science concentration, and minors in Asian Studies and Business. Maia has maintained a perfect grade point average and has been named to the Dean's List every semester while enrolled at Auburn. She has been awarded the Protective Life Corporation Endowed Scholarship, the John Edward Wiatt Fund for Excellence, and the COSAM Outstanding Junior Award for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Maia has also received two certifications from the Society of Actuaries in Financial Mathematics and in Probability.

Maia was previously an Actuarial Consulting Intern at Willis Towers Watson, where she completed training that involved data preparation, benefit calculation and funding valuations. As a studentathlete on the Auburn University Swimming and Diving team, Maia led several group team activities focused on team building skills. She is currently the Actuarial Club President, a Student Assistant for Auburn University College of Engineering Online, and the Associate Head Mathematics Tutor for Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics.

Upon graduating, Maia will work as an actuarial analyst in the retirement division of Willis Towers Watson, based in Arlington Virginia.

Jack Terry, Dean's Medalist

Jack Terry

Jack Terry will graduate with concurrent Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Economics and a minor in Spanish. Jack received the Physics Outstanding Senior Award in 2023, has been named to the Dean's List each semester, and has maintained a perfect grade point average.

During his time at Auburn, Jack has held numerous leadership positions on campus through his service as a COSAM Leader, Scholarship Chair for the FarmHouse social fraternity, and Head of Logistics for the Beat Bama Food Drive. He is a member of the Economics Club and the Society of Physics Students, Phi Beta Kappa, and Mortar Board honor societies. Jack also worked as an Introductory Physics Undergraduate Teaching Assistant where he facilitated laboratory sections for two different courses.

At Auburn, Jack participated in undergraduate research with the Department of Economics and the Department of Physics where he completed an Undergraduate Research Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Minseo Park. In Fall 2023, Jack continued the research he started as a Summer 2023 Undergraduate Research Fellow at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, working with the Bertolet Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School to explore the radiobiological effects of several types of radiation on cancerous tumors.

Upon his graduation from Auburn University, Jack plans to attend graduate school and obtain a doctoral degree in Physics or Economics.
