Nokuse
Plantation We are developing a partnership with Nokuse Plantation Inc. founded by Mr. M. C. Davis and directed by Dr. Matthew Aresco. Nokuse Plantation is the largest privately-owned conservation property in the eastern United States created with the goal of forming a corridor between Elgin Air Force Base, the largest stand of old growth long-leaf pine in the world, with the choctawhatchee River Basin, one of the largest bottomland hardwood forests in the south. To date, over 50,000 acres of land have been acquired and are being restored to a natural condition. Much of the land protected by Nokuse is directly contiguous with bottomland hardwood forests along the Choctawhatchee River which are potential habitat for Ivory-billed Woodpeckers. Nokuse is a sponsor of our 2006/2007 ivorybill search and they will be a key partner in preserving Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in this part of the south once the search phase has ended. |
