Tornado Relief
On Sunday, March 3, 2019, an E-F4 tornado, with winds up to 170 miles per hour, hit southern Lee County, devastating the Beauregard community. At least 23 people have died and a number of families have been left homeless.
Auburn University is currently collecting the following items for those affected by the tornado:
- Bottled water
- Diapers
- Baby formula
- Baby wipes
- Trash bags
- Packaged foods
- Hygiene products
- Work gloves
Used clothing will not be accepted. These items will only be collected this week, March 4-8, 2019.
Please take all donated items to the Foy Desk in the Student Center, the Burton Hall conference room or the Facilities Management Complex, 1161 W. Samford Ave. Facilities Management will deliver the items to the Lee County Emergency Management Agency at the end of the week.
NOTE: Local emergency response authorities, the American Red Cross and other relief organizations are advising individuals NOT to travel to affected communities at this time, or to attempt to send unsolicited goods or perishable items to the area. Many of the impacted areas are accessible only to first-responders, who are on location to assess the areas of greatest need. Many thousands of people traveling to these areas at once creates serious safety concerns and hampers the ability of first responders.
Donate to Relief Efforts
Financial contributions are the most efficient and effective way to help victims of the tornado. The Auburn family is encouraged to donate financially to trusted, reputable, voluntary or charitable organizations. Cash donations give relief agencies and organizations the most flexibility to address urgently developing needs.
- Give to the: TAYLOR THORNTON FUND
- It is with great sadness that we tell our College of Veterinary Medicine community that David Thornton, a pharmacy technician in Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital, and his wife, Ashley, tragically lost their 10-year-old daughter, Taylor, in the tornadoes that hit our county Sunday. The college, through the efforts of Starr Miller, is collecting money to cover funeral and related expenses for the family.
- An account has been established at the Auburn University Federal Credit Union, and contributions can be made to the "Taylor Thornton Fund" there.
- Donations also are being collected at Pharmacy in the Small Animal Teaching Hospital. Checks collected there will be deposited daily. Checks should be made out the "Taylor Thornton Fund."
