Frequently Asked Questions

To make an appointment, visit AU Access, go to the "My Academics" tab, and log in by selecting "Miller Writing Center." Once you are in Advise Assist, follow these steps:

  • Under "What type of appointment do you need?", select "Miller Writing Center."

  • Under "Service," you will see a dropdown menu with several categories and many services.

    • If you want to meet with your consultant, select any service under the categories for face-to-face or Zoom feedback.

    • If you want to upload your project and get written comments without meeting, select any of the services under the category for written asynchronous feedback. (All relevant services have an "ASYNC" tag.)

    • If you want to see all the consultants' availabilities, select the service "Other/General Writing Questions."

  • Under "Date," select your desired appointment date.

  • Click "Find Appointments."

  • Select your desired appointment time.

  • On the "Review Appointment Details and Confirm" page:

    • Under "How would you like to meet?", select "In Person" for a face-to-face meeting in RBD Library or "Virtual" for a Zoom meeting. (If you selected an asynchronous service, your consultation automatically shows as "Virtual.")

    • In the comments field, tell your consultant about your project.

  • Click "Schedule."

  • If your consultation is asynchronous, follow the link provided in Advise Assist to upload your writing project before the appointment's start time.

The Miller Writing Center is open in fall, spring, and summer semester from the second week of classes until the last day of class.

In spring, appointments are available on:

  • Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

  • Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

  • Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The writing center is closed on all university holidays and whenever RBD Library is closed.

Current students and faculty affiliated with Auburn University may use the MWC. Clients must have access to AU Access to make an appointment.

You can bring anything, including but not limited to papers, conference proposals, lab reports, lesson plans, presentations, short stories, PowerPoints, and ePortfolios. Consultants can help you with any part of the process, from brainstorming ideas to writing a first draft to polishing a final version.

In Advise Assist, you will choose from a list of services related to the field and genre of your project. Your selection will filter the consultants, showing you only consultants who have the desired specialization. If you are open to meeting with any of our consultants, all of whom are trained to give effective feedback on all types of writing, select the “Other/General Writing Questions” service.

No, you don’t need to bring anything. You can schedule an appointment even if you don’t have a draft of your writing project. However, if you have an outline, draft, assignment description, or rubric, these documents may help your consultant customize the session to fit your needs.

The consultant will have up to 50 minutes to work with you. The session will begin with the consultant learning about your writing project and setting goals for the session. For most of the time, the consultant will work with you on the area(s) you identified together. Because we aim to help you become a better writer, these sessions will be active and conversational. The consultant may ask questions, encourage you to read sections of your writing, suggest you draft part of the writing in the moment, or help you find resources related to your topic or writing project. You’re expected to participate in the entire session.

You will meet your consultant on Zoom and share your work with them through screen sharing, the whiteboard tool, or a shared document. You may use audio or chat to communicate with the consultant during the appointment. Even though the appointment is virtual, you’re expected to participate in the entire session. You will receive written feedback on your uploaded document from a peer consultant on the day of your appointment. Your consultant will provide a letter summarizing their recommendations for revision, and they will also give you detailed in-text comments. Since you and the consultant will not meet to discuss your project’s context or goals, make sure to give as much information as possible in the appointment form.

Consultants are undergraduate and graduate peers who are trained to work with all types of writing. These students represent a range of fields/disciplines and can help you during any part of the writing process. Writing consultants can help you become a better communicator and learn how to present ideas effectively. However, they are not disciplinary experts. If you have questions about course content, please contact your professor or schedule an appointment with one of the programs in Academic Support.

We welcome applications from all students! Applications are typically due in March. Visit the Join the Team page to learn more about the specific deadlines, qualifications, and application materials.

Students using the Miller Writing Center agree to adhere to the following policies:

  • You can make up to three appointments per week (Monday through Sunday). To ensure consultants receive a break between sessions, appointments may be scheduled on the same day, but not back-to-back.

  • Appointments start on the hour and last up to 50 minutes.

  • Walk-in sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and depend on availability.

  • Due to the collaborative nature of the sessions, you will only be able to work on your own writing projects, not work that another person wrote.

  • For group projects, only one group member must be present during the appointment, although the entire group is encouraged to attend if schedules permit.

  • You must use your own account to schedule appointments. Appointments made using another person's account will be canceled.

  • You may cancel up until your appointment start time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment will be marked as a no-show.

  • If you miss three appointments, you will be blocked from using the MWC until you email Jake Gebhardt.

  • MWC staff may reschedule or cancel appointments due to inclement weather, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances.

  • Instructors and advisors are not informed when you use the MWC. You will receive a session report after each visit, which you can forward to others if you wish.

  • If you have accommodations through the Office of Accessibility, you may contact University Writing at universitywriting@auburn.edu or (334) 844-7475 to discuss how your accommodations apply to the MWC.
