America 250 at Auburn University
As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Auburn University will host a yearlong series of campuswide events and activities celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial.
As the foundation of the United States, the Declaration of Independence states that all people are created equal, endowed with unalienable rights, and governed by consent.
Nearly 250 years later, these ideas continue to shape civic life and democratic institutions. America 250 at Auburn University invites members of the campus community and beyond to engage and explore how these ideals have been interpreted, challenged, evolved, and/or reaffirmed over time.
By being both anchored in and extending across disciplines, this year-long programming demonstrates our institution’s long-standing commitment to open inquiry and robust discussion of complex issues.
New events and programs will be added throughout 2026.
In the spring of 1776, the American colonies stood at a turning point shaped not only by conflict, but by ideas. Years of debate, petition, and public argument had sharpened a shared belief that liberty required understanding, and that self-government supported educational opportunities. In Philadelphia, representatives gathered knowing that the words they chose would do more than justify independence. They would articulate the principles upon which a society of learning and civic responsibility might stand.
