Going abroad can be a life-changing experience for students. However, a lack of funding and/or knowledge of the impact of these programs may serve a as a barrier preventing participation. This results in many students missing out on an amazing opportunity to improve international awareness and intercultural competency. To address this issue, the STEM Global Learning Immersion for Diverse Experiences (GLIDE) is designed to offer first time international travelers the opportunity for interdisciplinary learning through the lens of water quality while enhancing their cultural awareness. Traveling to Belize, students will focus on this global issue which spans disciplines as the foundation for broadening their understanding of the cross-disciplinary nature of STEM. During the spring semester students will take a course covering a range of topics including:

  • Water purification process
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Water Scarcity/drought management
  • Water conservation
  • Health disparities in relation to water issues in the United States and abroad
  • Water-related public policies

Once in Belize, students will participate in service-based learning related to water quality issues in the country. Students will also extend their education outside of the classroom by engaging with the local cultural through the exploration of historical sites and social activities. STEM GLIDE’s goal will be for students to utilize the knowledge gained during this program to have a positive impact on people, animals, and plants in the US and abroad. This program is completely funded and is at no cost to the students.

Hearing from the Students

This trip allowed me to experience and learn about a new culture for an entire week, and it’s something I will never forget. I had the chance to learn about water quality and its importance, a topic I had never really considered before but am thankful to have been taught. It made me appreciate things like having unlimited access to running water and clean drinking water. Aside from the educational aspect, I also made unforgettable memories through activities I had never done before, such as kayaking in the ocean, canoeing along a river, and snorkeling with sharks. Along the way, I formed new connections and friendships with the people in my group. This trip pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realize how privileged I am to live in a developed country like the US. I came to understand that many things I thought were “normal” or easy to access are not. For example, many houses in Belize do not have air conditioning, and washing machines and dryers are considered luxuries. These are things I thought everyone would and should have, but that’s not the case. After this trip, I have a different mindset and see the world through a different lens than I did before. My eyes were opened to reality because, while I had always heard about it, seeing and experiencing it firsthand confirmed it for me. This was truly a life-changing experience, and I will forever be grateful for being able to participate. - Tamira Henexson

I can't fully express how grateful I am for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. My favorite part was meeting the local people and learning about their culture, views, history, and ways of life. Everywhere we went, we were met with genuine kindness and care. This trip made me realize the importance of water, the environment, natural habitats and animals. Everything is interconnected, and that's why trips like these are essential for broadening our knowledge and learning how to help maintain our wildlife and ecosystem. Our snorkeling excursion was nothing short of extraordinary. Witnessing coral reefs, sharks, and other marine life up close was a rare and precious experience. This trip has made me appreciate many things I once took for granted back home. As Jack Hanna once said, “The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with your own eyes.” I am deeply grateful to the STEM Study Abroad program for this amazing opportunity, one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. -Maiya Felder

The STEM GLIDE Study Abroad trip was one of the best experiences I could have asked for. Studying abroad had always been a thought in my head, but due to financial costs, I knew it would not be feasible. From the first day of learning about the opportunity to stepping off the plane, I knew it would be a great experience to be a part of. One key takeaway was learning about how important it is to take care of our earth and how deforestation and harming our planet can affect our water and its quality. This is a big issue in Belize, as foreign entities have begun to purchase their land and destroy it by mining, which can disrupt the natural aquifers. Aside from the learning aspect, my all-time favorite activity was snorkeling in the ocean. Being from the city, it is not often that I get the chance to experience the beauty of the ocean and its wildlife. While it was a rough start out on the waters, it ended up becoming a memory of a lifetime. Not only was the STEM GLIDE a learning experience and full of fun, but it was also a great bonding experience because I met some great friends along the way. Shoutout to my sweet roommate Kenzie and shoutout to Marina and Edward for pairing me with her! -Chailyn Robinson

Reflecting on my trip to Belize, I am filled with a sense of wonder and appreciation for the rich experiences I had throughout the week. This adventure has left a lasting impression on me. One of the highlights was visiting the wildlife sanctuary, where I had the opportunity to see howler monkeys in their natural habitat. Their distinctive calls resonating through the forest, reminded me of the importance of biodiversity and conservation efforts. It was a great experience that deepened my understanding of the delicate balance within ecosystems. Canoeing on the Sibun River was another unforgettable moment. The peace that came with being on the river, contrasted with the sounds of wildlife and iguanas falling in the water created a perfect atmosphere. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving such natural landscapes. Additionally, the traditional drum show around the fire was a beautiful cultural experience. The rhythmic beats and lively atmosphere showcased the rich heritage of Belizean music and storytelling. It was a celebration of community, tradition, and creativity that made me appreciate the diverse cultures that thrive in this region. My time at Caye Caulker was equally as amazing. Kayaking and snorkeling in the ocean offered a glimpse into the vibrant marine life that inhabits the coral reefs. Swimming alongside fish, sharks and observing the intricate ecosystems beneath the surface highlighted the fragility of our oceans and the urgent need for marine conservation. Overall, in Belize. I learned about the connections between nature, culture, and conservation. The encounters with wildlife, the beauty of the landscapes, and the warmth of the local community all contributed to a deeper appreciation of all aspects of life. -Sakiyah Jenkins
