Application Process for AU Math Graduate Program

While we accept applications year-round, we strongly advise prospective students to apply by January 31st for Fall admission, especially if financial support is an issue. New teaching assistantships are rarely available in the Spring and never in the Summer. Moreover, most of our graduate-level courses are taught in year-long sequences starting in the Fall; and extensive orientation sessions for new students are offered at the beginning of the Fall semester, but not at other times during the year.

Applications for Fall admission are screened in February; admission and financial-support decisions are usually finalized in early March.

Minimum Admissions Requirements

A master's degree is NOT required to apply for admission to the Ph.D. program.

    • Remark: Issuance of the I-20 immigration form depends on the completion of this step. If admitted into one of our programs as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), the financial support from Auburn University comes close to meeting the requirement.

How to Apply:

  1. Complete the online application at https://graduate.auburn.edu/prospective-students/application-instructions/
  2. Mail the following to
    The Graduate School
    Auburn University
    106 Hargis Hall
    Auburn University, AL 36849-5122
    • One official copy of all transcripts (except transcripts from Auburn University).
    • If you did not pay online: Application fees are $60 for domestic applicants, $70 for international applicants.
      • Make check or money order (US dollars only) payable to The Graduate School of Auburn University. (Until fees are received, no application will be forwarded to the Department; therefore, no decisions will be made concerning admission and/or assistantships.)
  3. After applying on-line with the Graduate School, the Mathematics Department requires the following:
    • Three letters of reference for admission to any of its graduate programs. The letters of references for your application to the Graduate program will also be used to consider your GTA application, so no additional letters are required.
      • Your references need to submit their letters of recommendation through the official Graduate School (Apply Yourself) website. While filling out your application, you will be asked to submit the names of at least three references. They will be contacted by the Graduate School. Letters and documents mailed/emailed to the department will no longer be accepted with the exception of the GTA application.
    • A Curriculum Vitae.
    • A list of all mathematics/statistics classes (undergraduate or graduate-level) that you have passed (where, when, with what grade).
  4. The following is also required by the Mathematics Department if you wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship (GTA position):
    • A completed TA application form. Without this application, the committee and the GPO will assume that you are not interested in such a position.
      • International graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) must have a minimum score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) to be eligible to teach at Auburn. New GTAs are expected to achieve this qualification within a year of arriving at Auburn. A score of at least 23 on the speaking section of the iBT TOEFL, or a score of at least 7.0 on the speaking section of the IELTS, or a score of at least 4.4 on the iTEP speaking test is accepted as equivalent qualification. The iTEP speaking test is regularly administered at Auburn University prior to the beginning of classes. Alternatively, the language requirement for GTAs may be met by passing the course INTL-1820, Classroom Communication Skills for International GTAs.

Please note that without ALL of the above (except TA application form), your application is not complete and will not be processed by the Graduate Studies Committee.
