Title: Approximating Uncertainties in Simulation and Design

Abstract: In this talk I will present an overview of my current scholarly program, which centers on the numerical approximation of systems modeled by partial differential equations with particular emphasis on uncertainty quantification (UQ), the efficient numerical treatment of associated statistical uncertainties. The applications I have considered include coupled flow and transport models, light scattering, nonlocal diffusion, and atomic models underlying low density, collisionally ionized plasmas. I will highlight some of my contributions to the analysis and numerical approximations of the underlying physical systems, to the development of efficient statistical sampling methods for stochastic simulation, and to the analysis of stochastic optimization methods for design and control under uncertainty.
