Dean Giordano provides online update for COSAM’s Leadership Council

Auburn Oak leaves enter the DNA sequencing pipeline

“Moments after leaves were collected from the Toomer’s Oak clone, they were plunged into liquid Nitrogen (-196 °C) to preserve their genetic material, then placed on dry ice (-80 °C) for transport to HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville,” explained Leslie Goertzen, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the John D. Freeman Herbarium in the Auburn University Museum of Natural History in the College of Sciences and Mathematics. “The leaf tissue will be stored in ultra-cold freezers at the institute at a temperature of -80 °C. They will remain in this deeply frozen state until RNA and DNA extractions are performed in the Harkess Lab.”

NSF CAREER Award helps physics professor continue cutting-edge research on thin films

In addition to being part of an electronic and energy research cluster that has brought the best X-ray diffraction instrumentation to the state of Alabama and winning the U.S. Air Force Young Investigator Award, Ryan Comes, Thomas and Jean Walter Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, is now a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award recipient.

Announcing winners of Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair

The Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF), an affiliate fair of the Regeneron International Science Fair, took place on March 22-23 (6th – 8th grades) and March 30 – April 1 (9th – 12 grades) in an entirely virtual format. Over 70 AU faculty, graduate students and industry professionals volunteered to judge over 60 independent STEM research projects produced by students in a 19-county region of southeast Alabama. The conversion to a virtual fair format was made possible by a grant from the Society for Science, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC, that coordinates the Regeneron Fair system.
