Loveliest Village

Loveliest Village

Auburn is the proud home of Auburn University and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, one of the world's finest. It's the coolest college town in the South, according to us, and one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. for small businesses, according to Forbes. Centrally located near Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery, Auburn is easy to get to and easy to love.

Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top ten places to live, Auburn, Ala., is home to more than 55,000 residents. The following is an excerpt from USN&WR: "On football Saturdays, when die-hard fans arrive in droves to cheer their beloved Tigers, Auburn swells to the state's fifth-most-populous city. And as Auburn's largest employer, the university also plays a starring role in the local economy."

The city's unofficial nickname is “The Loveliest Village On The Plains”, taken from a line in the poem The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith: "Sweet Auburn! Loveliest village of the plain..."

The unique character of the city of Auburn is the result of a combination of influences from the special atmospheres and energies provided by the diversity of communities in Auburn. A key contributor to this winning formula is Auburn University, which brings to Auburn all of the educational and cultural opportunities associated with a world-class university, as well as a youthful presence and major sporting events of interest to national audiences.

Another key element is Auburn's ability, through a long-term strategy of managed growth, to maintain the small-town charm and identity of the loveliest village on the plains while undergoing the growth that is inevitable in a city with Auburn's reputation, outstanding public schools, and varied community offerings.

"Spend a little time in Auburn and you'll see why everyone's singing its praises. Not only does it offer a major college for students and an ever-growing business sector for those ready for the real world, but local landmarks dot the city and give it a one-of-a-kind flair. It's a pretty sweet place to call home."

"Auburn University pride is palpable throughout this football-focused town. Granite plaques honoring athletes, coaches, and administrators embed downtown sidewalks, and the phrase "War Eagle!" translates into the perfect reply for any situation. Stop by Toomer's Corner, named for 115-year-old Toomer's Drugs, a place that's famous for fresh-squeezed lemonade. We're told it's what God drinks on game days..."

"Auburn is a college town and is the home of Auburn University, which is also central to the city's economy. Auburn is home to the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art and the Telfair Peet Theatre, which hosts dozens of yearly concerts, including a series of outdoor concerts in the fall at Kiesel Park."
